Rodrigo, who’s been seen in Disney staples such as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Bizaardvark, has had better success in her early days on the charts than on the road, as Drivers License, released in January, debuted in the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Among Rodrigo’s achievements with the pop ballad include the having the 10th single ever to debut in the top spot – and the only time it’s occurred with a female artist’s solo debut. The song also shattered a Spotify mark for having the most streams of a song in a single week.

Speaking with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe earlier this month, Rodrigo opened up about her immense early success on the charts, and the pressure that comes along with making such a huge splash.

‘The success of Drivers License has been a huge lesson in how you just need to, when you put a song out, you just need to let it go,’ she said. ‘And it’s everyone else’s song to interpret, it’s not your song anymore.

‘But it is sort of difficult having that be my first song ever, because the success is so immense.’

She opened up about the dynamics behind her follow-up single, Déjà Vu.

‘I’m sort of obsessed with the concept of déjà vu,’ she said. ‘I get déjà vu all the time. And so I thought it would be a cool play on words to use déjà vu as a metaphor for this very universal thing that happens when you break up with someone and they get with somebody else, and see them living the life that you lived.’

Rodrigo’s debut album is slated to drop May 21.
