‘You can’t tame the bull’: ABC comedian Wil Anderson reveals what it was REALLY like working with Eddie McGuire at Triple M

Wil Anderson has finally spoken out about what it was like to work alongside Eddie McGuire on Triple M’s Hot Breakfast radio show.

Speaking to the Herald Sun on Monday, the 47-year-old comedian compared the experience to trying to tame a bull.

‘What I soon realised about that show was, it was a bit like bull riding. You were never going to tame the bull,’ he admitted.

‘It was trying to jump on the back of the bull and see how long you would stay on for. That was more the idea, than initially thinking you could go, “No, no, I’ll discipline and tame this bull.”‘

Wil said Eddie, 56, had a strict ‘deal with it on air’ policy, which often saw the two men butting heads on live radio.

Both Wil and Eddie have different political viewers, with Wil tending to be more left wing, while Eddie leans conservative.

But Wil, who hosts the advertising-themed panel show Gruen on ABC, said he didn’t mind the on-air clashes, and in fact ‘admired’ Eddie’s honesty.

‘Mostly the shows where you hear people disagree on air, are the shows where they get along well off air, and the shows where everybody is being nice on air, tend to be the ones where they all hate each other,’ he added.

Wil said he was very aware of what his role on the breakfast radio show would be when he first signed on.

He explained that ’90 per cent’ of what he was tasked with doing involved ‘making fun of Ed’ or their co-host Luke Darcy.

‘That was the role they employed me to do, and everybody was part of this agreement,’ he said.

Still, Wil confessed there were times when he occasionally overstepped the line, but said it was mostly related to their conversations about football.

Wil replaced Mick Molloy on the Hot Breakfast show in October 2017, and announced he was leaving two years later in December 2019.

‘I could not have felt more included here, from top to bottom. The management here in the building are just absolutely incredible to me,’ he said during his last broadcast.

Eddie and Luke, 45, quit the show in November last year, after 11 years on the air.
