2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards: Schitt’s Creek and The Crown BOTH sweep up TV trophies

Schitt’s Creek, The Crown, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom were the big winners of the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards, with all three shows taking home two trophies each.

Stripped of all the usual glitz and glamour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s awards show was a pre-taped event lasting just one hour. The star-studded guest list watched on virtually in Zoom-style fashion from home.

Schitt’s Creek won the awards for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series, The Crown was the recipient of Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series and Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was the winner of Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture.

Mark Ruffalo was the very first winner of the awards show, scooping up the honor for Best Male Actor In A Television Movie Or Limited Series for his role in I Know This Much Is True.

Family affair! Dan Levy accepted the award for Best Ensemble In A Comedy Series alongside his father Eugene Levy and sister Sarah Levy, whom both also star in the show

Ruffalo accepted the award virtually from home, beating out fellow nominees Bill Camp, Daveed Diggs, Hugh Grant, and Ethan Hawke.

‘Acting doesn’t happen in a vacuum,’ Ruffalo said in his acceptance speech. ‘It happens between people. And in a magical place created by a director like Derek and a writer like Wally Lamb. Mental illness is a real thing, and I just think it’s really important that we’re honest and open about it and have no fear and have no shame.’

Next, Anya Taylor-Joy won the award for Best Female Actor In A Television Or Limited Series for her role in The Queen’s Gambit.

Taylor-Joy beat out Cate Blanchett, Michaela Coel, Nicole Kidman, and Kerry Washington for the gong.

Next, Jason Sudeikis accepted the award for Best Male Actor In A Comedy Series for his role in Ted Lasso wearing a ‘My Body My Choice’ sweater while sitting upon a plush sofa.

‘Man, oh, man, are you kidding me? Wow. Thank you. To all of my fellow actors. I wanted to thank my mom for bringing me to plays and musicals in Kansas City every time they came through, whether it was phantom of the opera. I want to thank my dad for taking me to go see movies. Took me to go see “Beverly Hills Cop” when I was nine years old, and I knew I wanted to be a Black cop in Detroit. I’m getting there. And again, I thank my fellow cast mates, because they make me better because I just, again, have the job. Thank you, again, amazing.’

Catherine O’Hara was the recipient of Best Female Actor In A Comedy Series for her role in Schitt’s Creek.

‘I share this with Annie Murphy. I’m flattered anyone might believe I could be her mother. Annie is a beautiful soul, and, of course, for Eugene and Dan levy, and they’re amazing writers. Their story telling gave me and everyone in the town from which I am currently estranged every possible chance to love, be loved, make happy fools of ourselves, and blossom into the best we could be. If if that wasn’t enough, now this, thank you.’
