Denise Van Outen ‘upset’ over Ashley Banjo’s critique on Dancing On Ice after dislocating shoulder

Denise Van Outen has admitted that she was ‘really upset’ after Dancing On Ice judge Ashley Banjo critiqued her routine after she dislocated her shoulder.

The star, 46, was forced to quit the ITV show in January after her first routine following a fall in training which saw her dislocate her shoulder and suffer three fractures.

Denise and her pro skate partner Matt Evers only got to skate once in the competition, where they landed at the bottom of the leaderboard, after taking a tumble on the ice during rehearsals and suffering a painful injury.

Talking about the show and her one performance while her arm was still strapped up following her injuries, Denise admitted she was ‘deflated’ over the judges’ critique.

The presenter also revealed that she was ‘shaking’ and ‘vomiting’ after her routine as she was in ‘so much pain’.

Denise told The Sun: ‘I did feel deflated and really upset after Ashley said I needed to up my game. I thought, “How can I up my game with a fractured shoulder?”. I still haven’t been able to watch the routine as it makes me wince.

‘I skated off shaking and vomited because I felt in so much pain. I have no idea how I skated after my injury, it was so painful. If I watch it, it will take me back to the pain, it was excruciating.’

Denise admitted that she was never going to be a ‘world champion figure skater’ and in the judges’ defence, they didn’t realise the extent of her injuries as she still skated on the show as she is a ‘tough cookie’.

Talking about how her recovery is going after sustaining the injury following a ‘freak accident’ in January, Denise said that her movement is still ‘limited’ and that she will receive physio for a further six weeks. She has managed to ‘escape’ an operation.

Denise admitted that even though her stint on Dancing On Ice was ‘short-lived’, she felt ‘lost’ after she was forced to quit over her injuries as she loved spending time training with professional skating partner Matt.

After her skate on the show in January, where she performed to Tina Turner’s Proud Mary, the presenter received a total score of 19.5 from the judges.

Giving feedback, Ashley, 32, said: ‘Look, I have got so much respect for you. The ice is no joke!

‘It was interesting to see in two halves the contrast, because when you were on the stage – so at home, the energy was on point.

‘But when you got onto the ice, you were way more reserved. I think without injury and way more confidence, it will translate from that to that.’

MailOnline has contacted Ashley’s representative for comment.

Denise said: ‘I was going to propose last leap year, but we went into lockdown so it was impossible to do it properly. It didn’t feel right. So it’s a joint decision. There is no proposal. We’re doing it the modern way.’

The star added that they have both been married before and are in their forties so it won’t be a ‘massive, lavish’ wedding, adding that she doesn’t need a ‘diamond ring’.

Denise previously revealed that she spent 15 hours with a dislocated shoulder after injuring herself because she ‘didn’t really want to bother the NHS’.

The actress and presenter explained that she spent a painful 15 hours with her injury before finally deciding she needed hospital treatment, because she didn’t want to add to the strain the NHS is under amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking during an appearance on ITV’s Loose Women, she said: ‘After the rehearsal I spent 15 hours with my shoulder being dislocated, because we didn’t really want to bother the NHS knowing that they’re so overstretched.

‘So it wasn’t until the pain was so unbearable that they advised I went in to see them. They put my shoulder back in but it popped out again, and then I skated on it in the most excruciating pain I cannot tell you.

‘After that, I had an MRI, and it was fractured in three parts. So I’ve got three fractures and a dislocation.’

Despite her injuries, Denise and her professional partner Matt still took to the ice in January for their first – and only – routine of the series.

And the blonde beauty has confessed she pushed through her routine because she didn’t want to let anybody down, especially her 10-year-old daughter, Betsy.

When asked how she coped with skating on her injured shoulder, she said: ‘I don’t really know myself how I did it. I’m a bit of an old school theatre entertainer, I’ve been doing this since I was a little kid… not the ice skating, evidently.

‘But I just took a deep breath, I had to grit my teeth, but I think there was a number of reasons why I wanted to [carry on].

‘First of all, Matt, my lovely skate partner, had been working so hard with me because I’d never skated before, and I’d just built my confidence up to do the skating, and I didn’t want to let him down.

‘And also, my daughter. I knew she’d be watching, and I thought she’d be so upset if she doesn’t see Mummy go out and do her first skate. I just wanted to get on with it. I’m very much a “the show must go on” sort of person.’
