What is postnatal depression?

– According to BetterHealth Channel, it can be ‘a mild feeling of sadness to a paralysing depression’ after welcoming a child

-PND can affect both mothers, fathers and respective partners

– Symptoms include an inability to cope, loss of appetite, anxiety, negative thoughts

‘I was diagnosed with PND seven weeks after Elodie was born,’ Tahlia said.

‘We had one thing after another hit us (premmie, gastro, hospitalisation for bronchiolitis, reflux and feeding issues, all whilst trying to find somewhere to live).’

She said she found it hard going from having one child to two children after welcoming Elodie. Their daughter Sophie is now two.

She added: ‘I was a right mess. I just knew myself and I knew this wasn’t the person I am.’

‘I would cry  tears of frustration and anger. I wanted to pack my bags and just be on my own. I kept saying I’m not coping over and over again and I wasn’t.’

Tahlia revealed that she told Tom she was struggling and he suggested she seek professional help.

Tahlia said she will soon be going off her medication with the help of her GP and has been using exercise and heading to the gym as her own time to work on herself.

‘I do believe physical exercise is the best for mental health,’ she said, adding that the condition is ‘much more common than you think.’

Tahlia has also been open in the past with her battle with Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease.
