‘People want to enjoy the escapism’: Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure says she’s hasn’t revealed H’s identity to her closest friends and family as she sheds light on filming the ‘daunting’ show

Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure has admitted she hasn’t revealed H’s identity to her closest friends and family.

The actress, 37, who plays DI Kate Fleming in the ‘daunting’ BBC hit series, believes ‘people want to enjoy the escapism’ surrounding the elusive villain, after her fiancé Jonny Owen declined watching spoilers about series six ahead of its official release.

In a new interview, the screen star also discussed life away from her work duties as she confessed to bingeing It’s A Sin and The Crown during the coronavirus pandemic.

On remaining tight-lipped about the much-talked-about character, the thespian told Stylist: ‘I’ve never been offered anything to reveal H’s identity. And they’d be idiotic to try.

‘Even my friends and family don’t want to know [spoilers]. I was watching the first episode [of series six] the other day on my laptop [before it came out on the BBC]. And Jonny [her fiancé] came in. He just went, ”I don’t want to know.”

The This Is England star also revealed she offered advice to newcomer Kelly Macdonald – who plays DCI Joanne Davidson – about keeping up with the show’s jargon.

She said: ‘It is daunting, and I did say that to Kelly… We all slip up, everybody has little brain farts. That’s completely normal. We’re all knackered and filming through a pandemic is quite tricky. But we got through it.’

Elsewhere in the discussion, Vicky touched on helping co-star Martin Compston maintain his London accent for the series as she said the Scotsman only slips back to his native voice when he has a ‘few beers or is speaking to his family’.

The TV star went on to talk about finding time for herself during the global crisis, sharing: ‘I recently watched The Crown… I enjoyed it and with everything going on now [with the royal family] it’s even more fascinating.’

Earlier this month, Vicky quipped she and Welsh producer Jonny, 49, could end up getting married at Gretna Green – the Scottish village which is famous for runaway weddings – after their nuptials were put on hold due to lockdown.

The BAFTA winner got engaged to the filmmaker in December 2017, but has admitted she still hasn’t even booked a venue for the big day.

Speaking on the Graham Norton Show about putting off her wedding plans, the TV star said: ‘We didn’t get married, but we haven’t even booked it.

‘I’d marry him tomorrow, but we’ve never got around to cementing the plan. We will probably end up at Gretna Green!’
