American Gods starring Ian McShane canceled at Starz after three seasons due to falling ratings and creative clashes

American Gods has been canceled at Starz after three seasons.

The Neil Gaiman-created series struggled to maintain ratings in its most recent airing and the premium cable network decided to end it.

However, according to THR.com, Starz is in talks with show producer Freemantle about a potential final movie or series of episodes that would wrap up the drama for fans.

The season three finale aired last week and the decision to not commission any more was announced Monday.

Ratings for the third season, which had been delayed due to the pandemic, fell by 65 percent, THR.com reported. 

The telling of the British author’s timely tale had been beset with problems almost from the get go. 

Its original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green left following a series of clashes over the direction of the series and the budget.

First season stars Gillian Anderson and Kristin Chenoweth left with Fuller and Green.

Replacement showrunner Jesse Alexander clashed with Gaiman and the second season didn’t premiere until almost two years after the season one finale. 

Meanwhile, another star Orlando Jones was fired after it was decided his character Mr. Nancy was sending the ‘wrong message for Black America,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter.

And then recurring castmember Marilyn Manson was dropped from the show amid ongoing allegations of abusive behavior.
