A grandmother who was finally able to meet her two newborn grandchildren left Lorraine viewers in tears after their emotional first meeting today.

Carol, from Hartlepool, was unable to see her two grandchildren in the flesh after her son Scott and his partner Rachel had baby Oscar in March last year and their second child Chester last month.

As of today up six people, or two full households are allowed to meet outside, including in back gardens – but people are being urged not to hug their friends and family.

Viewers were left in tears by their ‘lovely’ reunion, admitting it was difficult to see a grandmother still unable to cuddle her grandchildren after more than a year of the pandemic.

Carol was left speechless as she walked around the corner to meet her grandchildren, calling the babies 'gorgeous' and her son and his partner the 'Perfect little family’

‘I’m so excited, I really cannot wait,’ said Carol ahead of meeting her grandchildren.

‘You can’t describe the feeling’, she added, ‘It’s totally different to being a mum, being a nana. You can’t describe it, I’m so excited today.’

When asked what she was most excited for, Carol added: ‘Just the usual nana duties, lots of cuddles, taking them out for a walk, reading stories for them. The usual things, I just can’t wait.’

Ahead of being reunited with Carol, Rachel admitted that the first year with her babies hasn’t been ‘at all’ what she expected.

‘We don’t know any different so we try not to complain about it,’ she said. ‘But we are looking forward to this slow release, to meet everyone and see everyone and show out babies off.’

Scott added: ‘It’s been non-stop, it’s been pretty busy and it’s got busier as we’ve gone through [the year] but it’s been lovely to be in with everybody and spend time we’d never have had.’.

Speaking of his mother Scott went on: ‘She can’t wait and I can’t wait as well. It’s going to be a release isn’t it?’

‘I just cannot wait for a cuddle’, said Carol, ‘They’re perfect. Amazing absolutely amazing.’
