Weekend Today is CANCELLED due to ‘technical issues’ – as raging viewers threaten to ‘switch to Sunrise’ after Nine’s breakfast show is replaced by a ‘boring’ documentary

Viewers were left baffled on Sunday morning after Channel Nine’s Weekend Today was cancelled at the last minute due to ‘technical issues’.

The popular breakfast show, hosted by Richard Wilkins and Rebecca Maddern, was supposed to air at its usual time of 7am – but was bizarrely dropped at the last second, with Nine announcing the news on social media.

‘Due to technical issues, Weekend Today is unable to air at this time. #9Today,’ Nine posted, a whole hour after the show was due to be on-screen.

Confirming they were on-set and ready to go, Rebecca shared a picture alongside Dickie and Jayne Azzopardi captioned: ‘We’re so sorry, but we’ve had some technical issues this morning so we can’t go on air. We’re standing by if things change.’

A Channel Nine spokesperson confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that technical issues were to blame, adding: ‘we will return to normal programming ASAP.’

An abundance of die-hard Today fans took to social media to share their shock at the pull, with some threatening to ‘switch to Sunrise’ after the show was replaced by the Ellen Degeneres Show followed by a ‘boring’ documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.

‘I can’t believe a technical issue is stopping you guys going to air today! Just amazing, where’s your disaster recovery plan? I am switching to Sunrise,’ one raged.

‘No notification even after the end of THAT show so we sit through it thinking it is a temporary breakdown. Come on Channel Nine you can do better than that. Now we have a boring voice telling us about the barrier reef,’ a second added.

‘I’ve been googling since 7am to find out what’s going on with @TheTodayShow after being subjected to Ellen and Sunrise and it’s takes over 1 hour to tweet you’ve got technical issues… really?’ a third fumed.

Outrage: An abundance of die-hard Today fans took to social media to share their shock at the last-minute pull, and to complain that the show was replaced by the Ellen Degeneres show followed by a 'boring' documentary on the Great Barrier Reef

One fan gave a theory that perhaps the hosts had gone a little too wild the night before, writing: ‘Looks like they had too much fun at the opening of ‘Hamilton’.’

However, others stuck up for the network amid the drama, with one writing: ‘Now Ellen is finished I’m really enjoying The Great Barrier Reef doco. A much better option than Sunrise.’

‘What a bunch of bloody whingers. FFS. It’s TV. Your lives are not going to end because channel 9 stuffed up,’ another added.
