Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody blasts to number one at the box office ahead of Raya And The Last Dragon

Bob Odenkirk’s turn toward action films seems to have paid off after his new thriller Nobody was the highest grossing film at the weekend box office.

The 58-year-old comedian’s film $6.7 million in its first three days in theaters, with Disney’s Raya And The Last Dragon coming up in second place, Deadline reported.

Theaters in Los Angeles made up the biggest portion of the box office grosses this week with $1.1 million total, after they were allowed to reopen at 25 percent capacity earlier this month.

It’s a hit! Bob Odenkirk, 58, departed from his usual comedy to lead the action film Nobody, which topped the weekend box office with $6.7 million in grosses, according to Deadline

Odenkirk is best known for his HBO sketch-comedy series Mr. Show and his comic relief on AMC’s Breaking Bad, but he took a darker approach to its spin-off series Better Call Saul.

In recent years he has expanded his range with roles in Steven Spielberg’s The Post (2017) and 2019’s Little Women, though Nobody is her first time leading an action film.

The decision to save Nobody for a theatrical release, rather than a PVOD home release seems to have paid off based on its box-office success.

Odenkirk stars as a man living a tedious life who finds himself in trouble with Russian mobsters after he loses his temper and beats up some of their cronies attempting to hijack a bus he’s riding on.

Deadline notes that ‘guy-action’ films like Nobody and Liam Neeson’s The Marksman have ‘been doing a 5x multiple off their opening during the pandemic,’ suggesting audiences may be interested in more hyper-violent successors to the John Wick series.

Box office grosses have been steadily increasing as more theaters have reopened across the US, including in Los Angeles, where they can fill up to 25 percent capacity.

Several chains, including the upscale Arclight theaters, still aren’t open, but LA was the highest-grossing US market for the second week in a row.
