Heartbreaking moment girl, 4, opens card from her ‘daddy on the moon’

A mum has released heartbreaking footage of her four-year-old opening a birthday card from her ‘daddy on the moon.’

Abby Lever, 30, from from Swindon, Wiltshire, wanted to make her daughter’s fourth birthday as special as possible after losing her husband and the father of her children in December.

Ewen Lever, 29, died in a three-vehicle crash on his way to work on the A361, near Burford, Oxfordshire, on December 9.

The tragic accident left his wife Abby as a single mum to their two children Ayla Rose, four, and Poppy Rose, who is just seven-months-old.

Ayla turned four on March 3 and Abby decided to write her eldest daughter a birthday card from her ‘daddy on the moon’ as she faced her first birthday without her dad.

‘I lost my granddad in September and Ayla decided that he was on the moon so we just went along with it,’ explained Abby. ‘She asked Ewen and I if we were going to go to the moon and we told her of course not.

‘But little did we know that three and a half months later, he would. The only way I could explain it to her was that her daddy was now on the moon and it worked.

‘We wave to the moon every night and I know it won’t work forever but she thinks her daddy is on the moon and for now, that’s comforting her.

‘She just turned four but without her, I don’t think I could do it. She’s grown into this lovely little girl and she comforts me on a daily basis; wiping my tears and cuddling me.

‘On the morning of her birthday, I tried to make it as special as possible but it was hard.

‘She said she wished her daddy was there; I’m having to face all these hurdles as a solo parent and firsts without him and her birthday was one of the hardest yet.

‘It’s his 30th birthday this month and we should have been celebrating as a family of four but instead it will just be the three of us.’

Abby, who was on maternity leave, got the dreaded knock at her door in the afternoon of December 9, letting her know her childhood sweetheart had been in a fatal car accident.

She said: ‘It was a normal day; he had a shower, told us he loved us, gave us a kiss and then went to work at 6:45.

‘I rang him at 9:30am and had no answer but I thought nothing of it; he worked as a plumber so he was normally quite busy.

‘When I saw the police car, I thought it was to do with some theft in the area but when I opened the door, I instantly knew something was wrong. I had Poppy in my arms and I fell to the floor.

‘We’re known as this happy, perfect couple and we had just got the perfect family home together, to build even more loving memories and now this was the ending of everything we had lived for.

‘We’ve been together since we were 14-years-old and he was my best friend, he was my everything

‘It’s always been the two of us, facing the world together and now I was alone with our two babies’.

Ewen had been involved in a serious three-vehicle car accident involving his van, a lorry, and a 4×4.

Abby added: ‘Its likely I will never know what happened to Ewen but he had a collision with a lorry.

‘Within a matter of minutes, I had to be a mummy and daddy forever; it was horrendous.

‘I didn’t understand how he could be here one minute and then gone the next. I felt I was the only one this had ever happened too. Why my family? If I didn’t have our kids, I couldn’t have carried on without him.

‘It’s a different journey with kids because you can’t grieve in the way you want to; you have to be strong for them.

Now, Abby is hoping to support other men and women who have also lost their partner at a young age.

She said: ‘I’ve been fortunate to connect with a lady in Leeds and a guy in Swindon, who both recently lost their partners young and have two children.. I am so thankful for both of them, I have made two friends for life.

‘There are so many different Facebook support groups and it made me realise that it isn’t just me.

‘In the first few weeks I used to lie on my living room floor, playing songs that reminded me of Ewen but as time has gone by, I have realised that I have no option but to carry on and knowing I’m not alone, helps me to move forward.

‘I have hundreds of friends and such great support but it’s the loneliest I’ve ever felt; the only thing that helps is talking to people in my situation who understand what I’m going through.

‘There are so many widowed people out there; this happens every day but everyone assumes you’re going to go through life with a plan but then something like this happens and it’s the biggest trauma to ever hit – a total unexpected tragedy!

‘I wish no one would ever have to go through the heartache of losing their partner but if you do, just know you are not alone.

‘Reach out to others like us and seek support from Facebook groups and charities. It helps to know other people have the same thoughts and feelings as you’.

‘I’ve been very vocal about how I feel on social media and I have had a lot of people contacting me to say how inspiring and strong I am.

‘But I am just doing what anyone would do in my position; I am being strong for my children which is what my husband would want me to do.

‘He made me the person I am today, and I will forever be thankful for the 15 years I had with him’.
