Man is arrested over bomb alert at Queen’s Edinburgh home: Police arrest suspect after report of suspicious item in grounds of Palace of Holyroodhouse

  • Officers were seen combing forecourt and grass outside building this afternoon
  • Earlier today arrested 39-year-old man following the disturbance on Wednesday
  • Yesterday a specialist bomb disposal team were called to ‘made the item safe’  

A man has been arrested after a bomb disposal team attended a report of a suspicious item in the grounds of the Queen’s official residence in Edinburgh.

Police were called to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at around 8.50pm yesterday and a specialist bomb disposal team made the item safe. 

Today investigators said a 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and said there was ‘no threat to the public’. 

The Queen spends one week at Holyroodhouse at the beginning of each summer and was not in residence.

Police officers carrying long sticks were seen methodically combing the forecourt and grass outside the building in Edinburgh today. 

Others looked down drains and underneath cars and some officers were seen putting items into clear plastic bags. 

Police vehicles were also stationed outside several entrances to the palace.  

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘We were called to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Abbey Strand, Edinburgh, around 8.50pm on Tuesday, March 23, following a report of a suspicious item.

‘Following examination by explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), it was made safe.

‘A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident. There was no threat to the public and enquiries are ongoing into the full circumstances.’
