‘So impressed with DrRanj #AllStarMusicals. Had no idea he could sing, what a beautiful voice & fantastic performance,’ one wrote.

Meanwhile, fans were equally surprised to see the usually stern Peston putting on his glad rags to perform Luck Be A Lady from Guys and Dolls.

‘Hats of to Robert Peston. He did an admirable job considering he was well out of his comfort zone,’ said another.

The celebrities performed in front of a judging panel headed by West End legend Elaine Paige.

Their combined scores will produced the winner, named last night as Judge Robert Rinder after dazzling with his rendition of Be Our Guest from Beauty And The Beast.

Rinder opened the show dressed as candlestick Lumiere and impressed the expert panel of Elaine Paige, Trevor Dion Nicholas and Samantha Barks with his showmanship.

Nicholas told Rinder he was ‘dripping with showbiz glitz and glamour’ while Paige praised his ‘pristine’ vocals and said he was ‘guilty of an excellent performance’.

The judges gave him 30 stars out of a possible 30.

He was named winner of the show after the scores of the expert panel were combined with the votes of the virtual studio audience.

Rinder said: ‘I was watching backstage and the talent, the beauty, the enthusiasm and the joy of everybody, I’ve had the best time ever and have done it in front of people I admire so much.

‘Open the theatres and bring us more joy.’

But Peston and Dr Ranj stole the show, with many taking to Twitter to support the performance.

‘I just caught up with All Star Musicals. My winner was definitely Dr. Ranj. What a beautiful voice. Who knew?’ said one.

‘Dr Singh can sing!’ commented a fourth.

Speaking after the show Peston said: ‘That was the scariest thing I’ve ever done by quite a wide margin.’

Barks told him: ‘You did not make a fool of yourself at all, this is so different from the guy I’m used to seeing on my TV giving politicians a hard time.’

Walsh performed Flash Bang Wallop from Half A Sixpence, while Hynes performed When You’re Good To Mama from Chicago, and Singh sang Come What May from Moulin Rouge.

Bradshaw-White performed This Is Me from The Greatest Showman.

The programme, hosted by John Barrowman, also featured a performance by Carrie Hope Fletcher from the new musical Cinderella.

Appearing on This Morning on Wednesday from his North London home, Robert revealed he’d ‘grown up’ with musical theatre and has ‘loved singing’ for his entire life, stressing he has ‘no regrets’ about taking part in the show.

He explained: ‘I massively enjoyed the process of learning and people can judge how much of a fool I made of myself when the episode comes out. But I have no regrets, it was sort of a dream come true.’

Robert previously said of signing up to the show: ‘I love singing though I haven’t sung in front of an audience since university. And I have always adored old Broadway and Hollywood musicals, a passion I inherited from my late dad.

‘So in the middle of lockdown, when asked by ITV whether I fancied indulging a fantasy and learning how to sing and perform one of my favourite show numbers, I thought ‘yes!’ I will make a fool of myself, but I could not care less.’

Joining Robert on stage is actress Jessica Hynes, Judge Robert Rinder, actor Barney Walsh, doctor and presenter Dr Ranj Singh, and actress Luisa Bradshaw-White.

John Barrowman will host the show while Elaine Paige, Samantha Barks and Trevor Dion Nicholas will act as mentors and judges.
