CCTV has been installed outside the home of the Metropolitan Police officer accused of murdering Sarah Everard amid fears of vigilante attacks.

Wayne Couzens’s house in Deal, Kent, is now under surveillance from a camera fastened to a lamppost.

Couzens, 48, is in custody awaiting an appearance at the Old Bailey to face charges of kidnap and murder of the 33-year-old marketing executive who disappeared from Clapham Common, south London, on March 3.

But his wife Elena this week returned to the family home where they live with their two children – and where the Scotland Yard armed officer was first arrested.

A Dover District Council spokesperson said: ‘The camera at this location has been put up by Dover District Council in the short term to provide reassurance to the local community in consultation with the local police.’

A police cordon has been erected around the house since Couzens, a officer in the elite Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection squad, became the prime suspect.

Miss Everard, originally from York, went missing while walking home to Brixton after visiting a friend in south London.

Human remains were discovered next to a defunct leisure and golf complex later that day. Dental records confirmed the remains belonged to Miss Everard.

Officers continue to investigate the neighbouring towns of Dover and Sandwich.

Sandwich, 40 miles away, became another major search area on Sunday where officers searched the Ropewalk and its waterway, the Guildhall and Coop car parks, The Butts recreational grounds and a builders’ yard this week.

Large police searches have been carried out in and near Couzens’ former family garage in Dover since last Thursday.

Following Couzens’s first Old Bailey appearance on Tuesday, he is due to enter a plea in July and could stand trial in October.

A second post-mortem has been ordered for Miss Everard after the results of the first were inconclusive at William Harvey Hospital on March 12.
