Bondi Rescue’s Anthony Glick reveals the emotional toll of saving lives

He risks his life every day to recover struggling swimmers at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

And Bondi Rescue star Anthony Glick has revealed that saving lives takes an emotional toll on the Waverley council lifeguards.

The 27-year-old spoke to The Daily Telegraph on Monday about the ‘challenging times’ he’s had to overcome in his line of work.

‘Deaths have happened before and unfortunately it’s probably going to happen again – that’s the reality of the job,’ he said.

‘With the bad comes the good and there’s a lot more good than bad so you’ve kind of got to deal with it. We have a good support network for those challenging times.’

Anthony, who hails from Johannesburg, said lifeguards can’t afford to dwell on the dark side of the job, but must instead try to stay focused. 

‘There’s a lot of adrenaline that runs through you on those busy summer days, but that’s what keeps you on your toes and makes the job really enjoyable,’ he said. 

Anthony joined the cast of Bondi Rescue in 2015, after being recognised for his strong swimming abilities at North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club.

He has since become a staple on the Channel 10 show, known for his good looks, upbeat personality and photography skills. 

He is known for his skill in the water, despite previously having a fear of sharks. 

Anthony told news.com.au in 2015 – a few months into his traineeship as a lifeguard – he was not ‘a big fan’ of sharks and ‘kind of sh*t’ himself when he was forced to dive into the waters after one became stuck in the nets off the coast of Bronte Beach.

‘It seemed like every shift I worked in summer there was a shark sighting to check. I don’t know if someone was trying to scare me,’ he said at the time.
