Oscar nominations 2021: Anthony Hopkins, 83, becomes oldest Best Actor nominee for The Father

Anthony Hopkins has made history as the oldest actor to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actor category at the age of 83.

The star is nominated for his leading role in The Father, a film about a man who moves into his daughter’s flat as he struggles with memory loss.

The previous record for oldest Best Actor nominee was held by Richard Farnsworth who was 79 when he was nominated for The Straight Story in 1999.  

The Welsh actor is nominated alongside the late Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Gary Oldman for Mank and Steven Yeun for Minari.

Anthony, whose character is also called Anthony, stars alongside Olivia Colman in the film, who has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as his daughter Anne. 

The Father is the second most-nominated film at this year’s ceremony with seven nods, while Mank has received the most with ten. 

Florian Zeller served as director for the drama which also stars Rufus Sewell, Imogen Poots and Mark Gatiss in supporting roles.

Anthony previously won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1992 for his role as Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs while his co-star Jodie Foster won for Best Actress.

He has been nominated for an Academy Award on four other occasions, receiving Best Actor nods for The Remains of the Day in 1994 and Nixon in 1996. 

The film star received Best Supporting Actor nominations for his roles in Amistad in 1998 and The Two Popes at last year’s ceremony.

This year’s Oscars will be broadcast live and ‘in-person’ from multiple locations, the Academy said last month, as details of Hollywood’s pandemic-delayed big night finally begin to take shape.

The Academy Awards in recent decades have taken place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, but with the United States’ second largest city still under COVID-19 restrictions, the ceremony is ‘adapting to the requirements of the pandemic,’ said a spokesperson.

‘To create the in-person show our global audience wants to see… the ceremony will broadcast live from multiple locations, including the landmark Dolby Theatre,’ they said in a statement to AFP.

The 93rd Academy Awards will be ‘an Oscars like none other, while prioritizing the public health and safety of all those who will participate,’ the spokesperson added.

No further new details were offered on the ceremony, which caps Hollywood’s lengthy award season.

For the first time, and only for this year, movies that debuted on a streaming service without a theatrical run will be eligible for some of the industry’s most prestigious gongs.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences lifted a longstanding requirement that films needed to screen for seven straight days in Los Angeles

It is not the first time the Oscars will take place at multiple locations. As far back as 1953 — the first time the ceremony was televised — proceedings were split between Los Angeles and New York.

In a historic moment for the Academy, four women have been nominated in the director category for the first time ever, while 15 of the 24 actors announced in the main categories are Black or Asian. 

This year’s Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, April 25.
