John Lennon’s hit single Mother is re-released with digitally remastered video on what would have been his mum Julia’s 107th birthday

  • The John Lennon Estate revealed on Friday, March 12 that they had released an updated video for the song, on the anniversary of his mother’s birthday
  • Reconstructed with the original photographs of Lennon and his family, the video tells the stories of the musician’s relationships with his loved ones
  • It has been remastered in 4K as an ‘Ultimate Mix’ for the special edition album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band-The Ultimate Collection 
  • Set to be released on April 16, the new collection celebrates 50 years of the late Beatles icon’s debut solo album with an eight-disc super deluxe box set
  • The collection features remastered version of his songs, and gives fans an insight into the 1970 recording session, and includes a 132-page book

John Lennon’s hit single Mother has been re-released with a digitally remastered video on what would have been his mum Julia’s 107th birthday.

The John Lennon Estate revealed on Friday that they had released an updated video for the song, which has been remastered in 4K as an ‘Ultimate Mix’ for the special edition album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band-The Ultimate Collection.

Reconstructed with the original photographs of Lennon and his family, the video tells the story of Lennon’s relationships with his mother and father Alfred, as well as his wife Yoko Ono and their sons Julian and Sean.

Using pictures from his childhood and his family life with Ono and their children, the video uses Lennon’s moving lyrics to evoke the emotions he felt whilst writing them.

The video for Mother was originally released in 2003 for the DVD Lennon Legend: The Very Best of John Lennon, and is the first track from the new collection.

Set to be released on April 16, the limited edition album celebrates 50 years of the late Beatles icon’s debut solo album with an eight-disc super deluxe box set.

In it, the collection is said to give fans an ‘an immersive, deep listening experience and in-depth exploration’ of John’s masterpiece album.

The collection is fully authorised by Lennon’s wife Ono, who also oversaw the production process to create the special album.

As well as featuring remastered version of his songs, the collection gives fans an insight into the 1970 recording session, and includes unreleased and rare demos, rehearsals, outtakes, jams and studio conversations.

In total the collection includes 87 never-before-heard recordings that will no doubt delight fans, while also featuring photos and special edition posters. 

As well as 11 hours of music, the collection includes a 132-page book featuring lyrics, extensive notes from the recording process and rare photographs.

In the preface of the book, Ono says: ‘With the Plastic Ono Band albums, John and I liked the idea of this really raw, basic, truthful reality that we were going to be giving to the world.

‘We were influencing other artists, giving them courage, giving dignity to a certain style of vulnerability and strength that was not accepted in society at the time. 

‘It was a revolution for a Beatle to say, “Listen: I’m human, I’m real.” It took a lot of courage for him to do it.’

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band-The Ultimate Collection will be released on April 16, 2021 and is available to pre-order now.
