Martin Kemp has reflected on how his life changed when he quit drinking.

The Spandau Ballet star, 59, spoke on Lorraine on Thursday about his health regime and how he quit drinking a decade ago because booze was ‘slowing him down’.

Happy days! Martin Kemp has reflected on how his life changed when he quit drinking

Martin detailed his life-changing decision to quit drinking, while admitting he does have the ‘odd drink of wine’ but confirmed he is ‘not a drinker’.

He said: ‘[Quitting booze] was huge, huge for me I stopped drinking probably about 10 years ago, don’t get me wrong I have the odd glass of wine but I’m not a drinker I don’t drink at home, I don’t smoke…

‘I think it was the drinking thing that I realised was slowing me down. For me that was the big change in my life, as soon as I stopped I started to feel a lot healthier…

‘As I got older I thought Martin you need to find some exercise that mentally makes you feeling young. There’s nothing that upsets me more in this world than seeing young girls and guys smoke, it upsets me more than anything else.’

Back in 2018, Martin stunned fans when he revealed he had three kidneys, yet confirmed the extra organ did not prevent him feeling the effects of alcohol.

He said that the kidney – which helps the body to filter out alcohol from the blood – didn’t stop him from feeling the impact of a wild night out.

He confirmed he doesn’t suffer with hangovers any more since he no longer drinks alcohol after he had two benign brain tumours removed in 1995 and 1997.

He said: ‘I used to get big hangovers, that’s a fallacy, but I don’t drink anymore, which is really nice. I stopped drinking years ago.’

His appearance on the show came as ITV announced that he and son Roman are making a bumper return to the weekend morning schedule.

It was revealed by show bosses that the duo will now present their show, with its new title Martin & Roman’s Weekend Best, across Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Martin said: ‘Roman and I are ready and raring to go for this new series and can’t wait to wake up with viewers on Saturday, as well as Sunday mornings. We’ve got brilliant guests lined-up and some fantastic new items, too.’

His beloved son meanwhile added: ‘I might wind him up (just a bit!) but I love working with my dad. So the fact we get to do the series again – and across the whole weekend – is just brilliant. We’ve got lots of stuff planned, I can’t wait!’
