Dominic West is ‘set to portray lothario Dudley Clarke’ in new BBC drama SAS: Rogue Heroes

Dominic West has reportedly been cast as lothario Dudley Clarke in the new BBC One drama SAS: Rogue Heroes, it was claimed on Tuesday.

According to reports from The Sun, the actor, 51, is taking on the role of the World War II spy, who was known to be surrounded by women who were referred to as ‘Dudley’s Duchesses’.

In October last year, Dominic was seen sharing a scooter ride and caught kissing actress Lily James, 31, during a trip to Rome.

Referring to the incident, a source told the publication: ‘Viewers would be forgiven for thinking Dominic was getting typecast in roles on the back of what’s happening in his private life.

‘Signing up for Rogue Heroes comes after he was asked to play love cheat Prince Charles in Netflix blockbuster The Crown.’

MailOnline has contacted Dominic’s representatives and BBC spokespeople for further comment.

SAS: Rogue Heroes is being adapted from Ben Macintyre’s book of the same name, and follows a Special Forces unit, the SAS, and will show how they were formed during the Second World War.

Clarke was seen as a master of espionage during the Second World War, and was once arrested in Madrid while wearing a dress.

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is working on the project, while Dominic’s co-stars include Alfie Allen, Jack O’Connell, Connor Swindells and Sofia Boutella.

According to Variety, filming is already underway for the drama and it is being directed by The Serpent’s Tom Shankland.

Last month it was reported Dominic and his wife Catherine FitzGerald were focusing on rekindling their marriage as they enjoyed a luxury family trip to Kenya.

The actor was thought to be in Africa with his family for charity work and a source claimed they looked as if their past troubles are ‘clearly behind them’.

An onlooker in Kenya told The Sun: ‘Their [Dominic and Catherine’s] problems are clearly behind them, however awkward or embarrassing it must have been.

‘They’re clearly sorted and together with their kids and, from the body language, have forgotten all about whatever went on with Lily.

‘What is a shame is she seems to have got all the flak for it, while Dominic walked away totally unscathed. No wonder people said he looked smug.’

MailOnline contacted representatives for comment at the time.

The Daily Mail reported on January 20 that Dominic had jetted to the idyllic island of Lamu, off the coast of Kenya, for no fewer than five weeks.

However at the time it wasn’t known if Catherine and their four children, aged from seven to 15, were with him. Dominic also has a 23-year-old daughter, Martha, with Polly Astor.

The trip comes after Catherine revealed she is trying to convince the actor to move to her family seat in Ireland months after their marriage was rocked by scandal.

Speaking in the March issue of Tatler, Catherine, 49, said she would like to live full-time at Glin Castle, which sits on a 400-acre estate in Co Limerick.

The castle has been in Catherine’s family for 700 years and has famously played host to Taylor Swift, Sir Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull.

‘I can’t persuade Dominic to move their altogether yet, but I’m working on it,’ Catherine told the magazine.

The landscape gardener is the eldest child of Desmond FitzGerald, the 29th Knight of Glin, who died in 2011 with no son to inherit his title.

‘The title can skip a generation and my son [Senan, 12] could be the next Knight of Glin,’ Catherine explained. ‘But he’s just mad into football.’

Dominic and Catherine put on a united front at the castle over Christmas, two months after the actor and co-star Lily were pictured together in Rome.

He and Catherine posed alongside their four children Dora, 13, Senan, 12, Francis, 11, and Christabel, seven, in a family photo taken in the grounds of the castle.

The married couple did not stand next to one another in the snap and were separated by their offspring.

In October, Dominic and Lily made headlines when they were photographed sharing intimate moments on a trip to Rome.

As well as meeting their mutual acting agent, they were spotted sharing a scooter ride and in a clinch over lunch.

The pair are co-starring in an upcoming BBC adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s novel The Pursuit Of Love.

After they returned to the UK, Catherine insisted she and Dominic were ‘very much still together’, and the couple shared a kiss for the world’s media outside their home in Chippenham, Wiltshire.

Dominic and his wife kissed for the cameras outside their home and wrote a note that read: ‘Our marriage is strong and we’re very much still together.’

Catherine broke her silence to assure MailOnline that her marriage is ‘fine’, as friends confirmed she was determined to make her marriage work and avoid a divorce.

She told a reporter: ‘We’re fine, thank you very much, yes we are. Things are OK between us. We don’t need any advice from anyone, thank you.’

Dominic and Catherine married in June 2010 after reuniting following their university romance.
