RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under star Coco Jumbo saved a man from vicious Oxford Street gay bashing

 Sydney drag royalty Coco Jumbo once saved a man on Sydney’s famous Oxford Street in Darlinghurst from a violent hate crime.

One of the recently announced stars of the forthcoming RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under on Stan ‘was one of a trio of queens’ who fought off a gay Surry Hills man’s attackers back in 2017, per an account of the incident.

‘I don’t think they knew what they were getting themselves into. I used to play rugby league,’ she told news.com.au of the unprepared attackers. 

Coco, along with fellow drag queens Ivy Leaguee and Vybe were picking up some kebabs after work when they witnessed a group physically assault a man on Oxford Street.

The attackers were allegedly shouting homophobic slurs at the time.

Coco and friends stepped in to defend the victim, leading to a scuffle. 

‘A guy pushed Ivy so I picked him up and threw him into the gutter,’ said the reality TV star of the ensuing fight.

‘He tried to run away and I chased him into the oncoming traffic. I’m surprised my wig didn’t come off.’ 

Coco then summed up the encounter: ‘Don’t mess with gay people. Let alone two men dressed as women. Silly boys.’  

A Sydney native, Coco has performed on the Mardi Gras party main stage numerous times and is a multi DIVA (Drag Industry Variety Awards) award-winner.

She worked with Absolutely Fabulous’ Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, 2014 Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst, and Australia’s very own Sandra Sully, before being selected for RuPaul’s latest show. 

RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under is set to premiere later this year, only on Stan.

And the 10 Australian and New Zealand contestants competing in the eight-part series were announced at Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade on Saturday.

With host RuPaul Charles, drag icon Michelle Visage and Australian comedian Rhys Nicholson on the main judging panel, the queens fighting for the crown of Australia’s first-ever Drag Race Superstar will also include Art Simone and Etcetera Etcetera.
