According to The Sun, bosses at You Are What You Eat’s original production company were keen to revive the format, which saw contestants vow to slim down in eight weeks by ditching their bad eating habits.

It’s thought they were eager to sign Trisha, who has been in the midst of a comeback on British TV after spending a decade working in the US.

A source said: ‘The production company, CPL, were keen to breathe new life into it, and who better to do that than Trisha, who is so well loved and respected by viewers.

‘They hope she will bring a fresh impetus to a popular show. And Channel 5 were delighted to give her and the series a new home.’

Trisha added: ‘There has been extra stress on us recently because so many of us have been forced to drastically change routines, and while our social lives have shrunk, the same can’t always be said for our waistlines.’

The presenter vowed to help the nation transform their eating habits after finding her own balance years earlier.

You Are What You Eat was a huge hit when it aired on Channel 4 for four series from 2004 to 2007.

The show saw nutritionist Gillian analyse – and predominantly criticise – the unhealthy diets of participants, who would even offer up samples of their poo for analysis.

The series never shied away from using shock tactics to scare its stars into losing weight, with one woman brought to tears after seeing a tombstone made of chocolate to show how she was heading for an early grave.

Following the show’s end, Gillian was forced to publicly state she’d no longer be using the title of Doctor in promotions after a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority called her nutrition qualifications into question.
