Disney Plus’ highly-anticipated Turner & Hooch series is bringing back an original character from the movie, with Reginald VelJohnson slated to return.
VelJohnson, 68, is returning to play David Sutton in the new series, according to a new report from Deadline.
He’ll by joined by Josh Peck as Scott Turner Jr., the son of Tom Hanks’ character from the 1989 movie, though there are no current plans for Hanks to return.

The show follows Peck’s Scott Turner Jr., a U.S. Marshal who inherits the massive French Mastiff dog.
While he has no interest in the dog at first, he ultimately realizes, ‘the dog he didn’t want may be the partner he needs.’
VelJohnson’s character Sutton was the elder Turner’s partner in Cypress Beach, California, but in the series he has become the town’s mayor.

He is a close family friend to Scott Jr. and his animal-loving sister Laura (Lyndsy Fonseca), and there’s said to be very little that happens in Cypress Beach without the mayor learning about it.
The series follows Scott Jr. and Laura who start investigating one of their father’s old cases, with Sutton becoming involved shortly thereafter.
VelJohnson will recur on the series, joining a cast that also includes Carra Patterson as Jessica Baxter, Scott’s brave, street-smart partner and Brandon Jay McLaren as Xavier Wilson, a cool, enigmatic marine-turned-US Marshal.

The cast also includes Anthony Ruivivar as Chief James Mendez, Scott’s boss with a secret soft spot for Scott’s new dog, Hooch, Jeremy Maguire as Matthew Garland, Laura’s dog-loving son and Vanessa Lengies as Erica Mouniere, the quirky head of the US Marshals dog training program.
There will also be five French Mastiffs who will portray Hooch, Scott’s slobbery, loveable French Mastiff.
Matt Nix (Burn Notice) created the series, based on the 1989 film, and serves as a writer and executive producer.

McG (Charlie’s Angels) directed the pilot episode and will also serve as an executive producer on there series, which is slated to debut July 16 on Disney Plus.
VelJohnson most recently starred in The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee and the TV movie The Christmas Lottery.
He also recently guest-starred on Mom, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia and Lazor Wulf.
