A nightclub DJ hanged himself after phoning his girlfriend to tell her that taking his own life was ‘the only way out’, an inquest heard.

Guy Alderton, 33, died on May 18 last year after leaving his home in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire to go to work at the Interchange Business Park in Newport Pagnell.

Mr Alderton, who worked as a carpenter, had called his girlfriend Sarah Farrell at around 5.30pm that day to tell her he wanted to end his life.

The inquest in Milton Keynes heard Ms Farrell immediately called emergency services, and police rushed to Mr Alderton’s workshop after tracking his van.

Officers noticed a light was on and forced their way inside the building, where they found Mr Alderton who had hung himself.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, Mr Alderton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner Tom Osborne heard the DJ, who had performed at several nightclubs across the UK, had a long history of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

He was also told Mr Alderton had been left in debt due to a past gambling habit.

Ms Farrell said: ‘He had a history of anxiety and depression but was not taking medication for years.

‘Guy had made comments that he would take his own life in the past but people managed to get hold of him and avoid this.

‘He self-harmed two years ago and stated that if he were to hang himself it would be in his workshop.’

A doctor from the Whaddon Health Centre, where Mr Alderton had been registered since May 2011, said: ‘He had a history of depression and anxiety which originated in 2015 when he started medication for his low mood and anxiety.’

The inquest also heard Mr Alderton had changed his career to become a carpenter in 2015 after revealing ‘extreme dissatisfaction’ with his work which had resulted in suicidal planning.

A post-mortem examination found his death was due to hanging.

The coroner concluded that Mr Alderton died as a result of suicide.

Following his death last May, the Revolution bar in Milton Keynes – where Mr Alderton often DJed – hosted an event in celebration of his life.
