Natalie Portman transforms into Chris Hemsworth’s Norse god character during filming in Sydney

She’s set to pick up Thor’s legendary hammer in Thor: Love and Thunder.

And Natalie Portman’s transformation into the ‘Goddess of Thunder’ was revealed for the first time on Thursday, with the Oscar winning actress spotted on set as the pivotal scene was filmed in Sydney.

Movie magic was utilized to transform the 39-year-old from astrophysicist Jane Foster into the all-powerful female Thor. 

Two men clad in head-to-toe blue lifted Portman, one literally holding her by the soles of her shoes, into the air as she raised her arms.

Presumably the men will be digitally removed in post-production, to leave the impression of Portman ascending into the air.

Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, which Jane wields following her transformation in the comic book series upon which the film is based, could not be seen. 

The mother-of-two was decked out in casual attire for the scene in which she plays her pre-god character, Dr Foster.

Portman sported dark jeans with Converse high top sneakers on her lower half.

On top she started out wearing gray hoodie over a burgundy T-shirt, and a denim jacket over that.

Gradually, as the shoot wore on, Natalie peeled off layers in a concession to the Sydney summer heat. 

The Black Swan star accessorized with a canvas satchel over her left shoulder.

She battled Sydney’s coastal wind in an attempt to keep her straight, shoulder-length brunette tresses from obscuring her famous features.

Eventually, Portman pulled her gray hood over her head to keep her hair in place.

Between takes, the Marvel movie’s director Taika Waititi stepped onto the set to give his star some direction.

The Jojo Rabbit helmer looked holiday casual in a white T-shirt, colorful board shorts and white sneakers worn without socks. 

He also donned a trucker cap and later on pulled on a long sleeve shirt as the East coast wind picked up. 

Also spotted on set was Natalie’s co-star, Tessa Thompson, reprising her role of Valkyrie from the film series’ third installment, Thor: Ragnarok. 

The Creed actress looked sharp in a pinstripe suit as she waited between takes and made sure to keep hydrated with a bottle of water.

The Los Angeles, California native then mounted a horse for her scene.  

Natalie was absent for 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, but was a key player in the first two Thor films in 2011 and 2013.

The former child star of The Professional will assume Chris Hemsworth’s Thor powers in the fourth installment of the blockbuster series.

According to Waititi, the film is largely based on Jason Aaron’s comic run, with Jane taking up Thor’s duties in the god’s absence.  

In the film, she will face off against Gorr, the God-Butcher who killed the gods that he felt betrayed him during his life.

The role will be played by Portman’s fellow Oscar winner, Christian Bale.   

Thor: Love and Thunder is being filmed in Australia after receiving a $24.1million location incentive grant from the Federal Government.

The film is expected to bring more than $178million to the local economy, create 2,500 jobs and enlist services from about 1,650 businesses. 

According to Screen NSW, it’s part of a deal which will see several Marvel films made in Australia over the coming years.

The film is largely being shot at Sydney’s Fox Studios, but elaborate structures have been seen at nearby Centennial Park, as well as Little Bay.  

Thor: Love and Thunder is due for cinematic release in May 2022.
