Former public schoolgirl, 28, who lunged at police officer avoids jail

A former public schoolgirl lunged at a police officer and called her a ‘Welsh dyke’ before yelling ‘I’m surrounded by Muslims’ while being handcuffed has avoided jail.

Hanita Dadswell, 28, attacked PC Larner after officers were called out to investigate a report she had been assaulted by her boyfriend at his Chelsea flat.

Dadswell – who has schizoid and bipolar disorder – called the officer a ‘Welsh dyke’ and shouted ‘I’m surrounded by Muslims’ before she was arrested.

She was on a suspended prison sentence at the time for an earlier offence of arson -where she set a pile of clothes on fire while in the psychiatric of a hospital.

And another incident in 2019 saw Dadswell – who has been sectioned several times – fined £185 and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs after she lunged at police officers with a wine bottle after an alcohol-fuelled date with her boyfriend on Valentines’ Day.

District Judge Karim Ezzat told Westminster Magistrates Court that Dadswell had breached the terms of her suspended sentence in the latest incident.

Dadswell admitted assault by beating of an emergency worker, racially religiously aggravated intentional harassment and breaching her suspended sentence order for arson  and was ordered to complete a 12-month community order.

Prosecutor Arfan Ahmed said: said ‘Police responded to a report that a victim was injured.

‘She changed her account when challenged, she hit out at PC Larner and was subsequently arrested and brought to the police station.

‘The defendant called the other officer a Welsh dyke. The officer was distressed, she kept on using the word dyke.

‘She was on a suspended prison sentence, she is in breach of that.

‘The Crown would be asking for costs in addition you may want to offer compensation.’

Defending, Malcolm Heider defending said: ‘She has pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

‘She is 28 years of age, she is in a stable relationship with Mr Sam Greywood who sits at the back of the court.

‘It was my client who had called the police on him. Hence their attendance at his address.

Mr Heider argued Dadswell suffered from mental health problems including schizoid and bipolar disorder.

‘It is a very complex disorder.

‘The offence occurred as a lack of consequential thinking and her emotional state at the time.

‘She has been sectioned quite a number of times in the past. She informs me she had stopped taking her medication at this time.

‘The body-worn footage captures the officer at the time and it is safe to conclude that the police officer in question did not receive any sustained injuries.’

Interjecting, District Judge Karim Ezzat said: ‘Does that therefore give her a pass to do whatever she likes?

‘What message does it send if I don’t activate the suspended sentence order?

‘You commit an offence by assaulting a police officer and racially abusing her, you can’t simply come to court and say I’m unwell.

‘The suspended sentence order was Arson. She set fire to her possessions whilst in the psychiatric ward.’

The judge told Dadswell: ‘I accept that you have not been well and when that order was imposed you might have not been well but it does not give you a get-out-of-jail free card.

‘I’m going to take into account the progress you have made with probation.

‘If you come back to court you will be going to jail, that’s exactly where you’re going to go’

Dadswell, of Earls Court, London, admitted assault by beating of an emergency worker, racially religiously aggravated intentional harassment and breaching her suspended sentence order for arson.

She was handed a 12-month community order with a 25-day rehabilitation requirement and ordered to pay £100 for breaching her suspended sentence, £85 in court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
