Mae Whitman has gushed that George Clooney ‘really took me under his wing’ after they starred together in One Fine Day.

She was only eight years old when she played his daughter in the 1996 romantic comedy and she said they ‘stayed close for many, many years’ afterward.

In fact Mae, 32, told People that she once ran into him when she was with a then-boyfriend and George warned her beau: ‘If you ever hurt her, I will hunt you down.’

One Fine Day is about two divorced parents played by George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer who fall in love with one another.

While Mae portrayed George’s daughter, Michelle’s son was played by Alex D Linz who went onto act in such movies as Home Alone 3 and Tarzan.

Mae told People the film ‘was such a cornerstone for me, of who I am. Especially working with George, we became so genuinely close, in a way that is funny. He’s just somebody that my soul really connected with.’

The former child star added: ‘”I think we just had something that just felt natural and normal, and we had the same sense of humor. And he really took me under his wing, and he took me everywhere, all around New York. And for many, many years after I would go to his house and I would get chased by his pig Max across the yard!’

George was famously close to Max, who died in 2006 at the age of 18 and who is rumored to have caused the end of his relationship with model Celine Balitran when she demanded that he choose either her or the pet.

Mae reminisced about George: ‘Remember when they used to sell wrapping paper in school, and you’d try to sell the most wrapping paper? I remember George would always wait until the very last day, like the deadline.’

She continued: ‘And then he’d be like: “Okay, what’s the highest kid have?” And then he would quadruple it.

‘So I would walk into class and go: “George Clooney, he wants 10,000 wrapping papers.” Those are the memories I have. I felt so supported and I felt loved.’

Mae’s current projects include the NBC crime comedy show Good Girls and she also recently appeared in a Valley Girl remake with Judy Greer.
