Today host Sylvia Jeffreys bungles her ‘gender reveal’ by accidentally popping balloon off-air

She’s only weeks away from welcoming her second child with Peter Stefanovic.

But Sylvia Jeffreys’ attempt to reveal the gender of the baby hit a hurdle on Wednesday, when the TV presenter accidentally popped a balloon early, showering the Today set in blue confetti during a commercial break.

The telltale party decorations couldn’t be hidden before the show returned to air and the surprise was ruined.

Whoops! Sylvia Jeffreys’ attempt to reveal the gender of the baby hit a hurdle on Wednesday, when she accidentally popped a balloon early

‘I may…have stuffed up the reveal a little too early by trying to test the strength of the pin,’ admitted Sylvia, while sitting next to a confetti-covered Karl.

During a replay of the incident, heavily-pregnant Sylvia was so started that entertainment reporter Brooke Boney remarked, ‘lucky you didn’t go into labour!’

‘We’re just going to ignore what happened before. This is the magic of television,’ said Karl, before another balloon was popped.

‘It’s a surprise. You’re having a boy,’ he deadpanned.

Her second son with husband Peter isn’t due until April.

But Sylvia gave her brother-in-law Karl  a scare on the Today show on Monday when she let out a loud groan reminiscent of labour pains.

‘I want to say something quickly between myself and everyone at home. Sylvia just went, “Ooh, ooh,”‘ Karl, 46, told viewers after a commercial break.

Karl, who is the uncle of Sylvia’s one-year-old son Oscar, looked panicked as he admitted: ‘I don’t know if I can deal with that.’

Sylvia, who is filling in for Karl’s regular co-host Allison Langdon as she recovers from a knee injury, then asked him: ‘Did you bring your rubber gloves this morning?’

Karl shot back: ‘Mate, this is serious. Is this serious? I don’t even want to look at you.’

‘Hey, at least I know not to have you by my side in an emergency,’ quipped Sylvia.

Sylvia, 34, has been married to journalist Peter, 39, since 2017.

The TV personality, who is in her third trimester, conceived her first son Oscar via IVF, but has said her second pregnancy was ‘spontaneous’.

‘We hadn’t planned to go down that path so soon, but having had not an entirely easy path the first time around you can’t be anything but thankful and grateful to have fallen pregnant this way,’ she told The Australian Women’s Weekly

The Nine presenter said many people had advised her against having boys 15 months apart, but she insisted they wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is also excited to be a mother of two sons because she was a very sporty tomboy growing up.

‘I’m not sure how I’m going to navigate the teenage years – that might be where Pete really has to step up – but I’m not worried about it,’ she told the publication.

‘I know it will be a lot to keep up with two turbo little boys, but for now I’m just embracing the beautiful chaos.’
