The man had taken the girl on a shortcut across the railway tracks at Zaozernaya station in Krasnoyarsk region, so he could buy her sweets as a birthday treat.

The pair crossed the line at a place meant only for staff.

They cleared the track but returned to walk alongside the rail line towards the sweetshop because a path on the other side of the track was blocked.

The father was hit by the train and fell over in the snow knocking down his daughter who was sucked under the wheels, say police.

‘A freight train was moving along the railway track at Zaozernaya station,’ said the West Siberian Investigative Department for Transport.

‘Despite this, the man crossed the tracks, not responding to high-volume warning signals given by the locomotive’s crew.

‘After that, holding his daughter by the hand, he walked alongside the railway track.

‘Being in a state of alcoholic intoxication, the man mistakenly believed that he was not in danger from the moving train.’

The father was not named.

A criminal case has been opened against the man who faces up to two years jail if convicted of causing death by negligence.
