Mission: Impossible 7, Top Gun: Maverick and A Quiet Place Part II will stream on Paramount Plus

In a sign that movie studios will continue to focus on streaming in a post-pandemic world, Paramount Plus has announced it’s shortening the amount of time its movies will be in theatres only.

The highly anticipated films Mission: Impossible 7, Top Gun: Maverick and a Quiet Place Part II will all become available digitally 45 days after opening in cinemas.

Not only that, but most other Paramount movies will debut on the streamer just 30 days after starting their theatrical runs.

The decision is regarded as a huge boost for the ViacomCBS-owned subscription streaming service which launches on March 4 to replace CBS All Access.

Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 7 will be available to watch on streaming service Paramount Plus 45 days after its theatrical release on November 17, it was announced Wednesday

‘Audiences are changing in their habits and we want to make sure that these films are available when they’re fresh after a full theatrical run,’ Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos explained to Variety on Wednesday.

The studio’s tentpole titles had been in limbo as a result of the COVID-19 crisis which led movie theatres to be shuttered.

A Quiet Place Part II was originally scheduled to open on March 20 last year but was rescheduled for Labor Day weekend before being  pushed to September 17 this year.

The coronavirus pandemic disrupted filming on Tom Cruise’s seventh Mission: Impossible movie which had shoots scheduled at various locations around the globe including England, Italy, Norway and Abu Dhabi.

Filming was only completed a week ago and post-production is currently underway in London with the film scheduled to premiere on November 19 in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Another high profile Cruise project Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to his Tony Scott-directed mega hit 1986 film, had been due to be released this past December.

It is now opening on July 2 for the Independence Day holiday weekend.

In a boost for Paramount Plus, which bows on March 4, another high profile Cruise project Top Gun: Maverick will also drop on the platform shortly after its July 2 theatrical release

The news is another blow to movie theatre owners who have been hard hit by the pandemic.

As cinemas remain closed in many places, studios such as Disney and Warner Bros. have been releasing films directly on their streaming services or simultaneously with a theatrical bow.

In a different model, Universal struck a deal with AMC and Cinemark that enables the studio to debut its films on premium video on-demand within 17 days of theatrical premiere.

Meanwhile, Paramount Plus is also commissioning original programming from its archives, rebooting beloved TV shows and movies.

There are also plans for series based on the classic tearjerker Love Story, released in theatres in 1970, and on 1969 crime caper The Italian Job.
