With Seven’s season of Holey Moley over, reality TV enthusiasts had only Nine’s MAFS or Channel 10’s The Amazing Race Australia to choose from on free-to-air.

Unfortunately for Channel 10, more viewers appeared to merge to Nine with MAFS seeing an increase of 28,000 metro viewers.

MAFS doubled the metro viewership of The Amazing Race Australia, as it only recorded 459,000 metro viewers.

ABC’s 7:30 faired slightly better than Channel 10’s reality TV adventure program with 503,000 metro viewers.

On Monday, the season eight premiere of MAFS was the most-watched program of the night with a peak national audience of 1.486 million.

The average national viewership was 1.255 million, with 964,000 people from the five major cities tuning in and 291,000 from regional Australia.

Nine’s programming director Hamish Turner told Media Week on Tuesday: ‘We are thrilled to see Australia once again fall in love with Married At First Sight.’

He said the Australian Open followed by the launch of MAFS had given Nine some of its best ratings among people aged 16 to 39 in more than a decade.

‘We expect the audience will again build across both linear TV and 9Now as Australia follows the journey of the experiment’s participants,’ Mr Turner added.
