Celebs Go Dating Paul Carrick Brunson had cultural appropriation row with Joey Essex

Celebs Go Dating Mansion’s matchmaker Paul Carrick Brunson was involved in a ‘cultural appropriation row’ with Joey Essex, who was a late arrival to the show.

The Sun reported that Paul, 46, accused Joey, 30, of making a ‘racially insensitive’ comment in scenes which have not been aired.

Joey used the term ‘fo’sho’ during a conversation with Paul, who is American, in place of saying ‘for sure’ and had already been warned by producers to not call Paul P-Dog ahead of filming.

Yet tensions rose when Paul tried to explain why Joey’s phraseology could be seen as offensive.

The term originates in African-American vernacular, but is often used by people of other ethnicities, sometimes as a kind of parody of language or culture.

Paul, who works alongside Anna Williamson on the show, alluded to a rift with one of the stars of the show in a post which was uploaded to social media.

He acknowledged that his ‘tolerance for bulls*** was non-existent’ while being away from his family, who remained in the US, while he filmed in the UK for 45 days, due to Covid.

And while the TV star didn’t name Joey specifically, he alluded to a row with a celebrity, which he claims could have turned violent.

He penned: ‘I never like saying goodbye, but this time was different.

‘Even though I made friends this series of my TV show – Celebs Go Dating Mansion I’ll have for life and I’m grateful for the opportunity, I was more than happy to leave once we wrapped. Why?

‘I broke a promise to my wife. 10 years ago, my wife and I made a commitment that if one of us had a project away from home that lasted over 10 days, we would travel together as a family.

‘For this series, because of filming restrictions due to Covid, Jill and the boys stayed in the US, while I moved to Surrey for 45 days of filming.’

‘Being away from my family for an extended period didn’t work well for me. On set my tolerance for bulls*** was non-existent.

‘The moment I felt someone was acting in the agency, I tuned them out.

‘The second someone hinted at disrespecting Anna, Tom, the crew, or myself, I snapped. For the first time I got into an off camera verbal altercation with a Celeb.

‘Real talk, if it wasn’t for daily meditation, exercise and CBD I would’ve put my hands on them. All this underscores a big lesson for me, my family is my strength.’

Moreover, a source told The Sun: ‘It’s fair to say that Paul didn’t gel with Joey as well as the other contestants – not because of any personal animosity, but because Paul thought Joey wasn’t taking the experiment seriously.

‘By his own admission, Paul was finding the show difficult and was already uncomfortable prior to Joey’s entrance.

‘At one point Joey misused some slang in front of Paul, who took him aside to explain why it could be seen as inappropriate.’

It’s been claimed that Joey meant no offence and ‘became agitated about the prospect of being painted as something he’s not.’
