The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) have cast Sasha Calle as their new Supergirl, it was revealed on Friday.

Sasha, 22, is set to become the first ever Latina Supergirl, and reports from Deadline claim she beat over 425 other actresses for the part which will see her make her debut in the upcoming Flash film.

The actress impressed Flash director Andy Muschietti, DC Films boss Walter Hamada and producers with her audition, with the publication reporting they were ‘blown away’ by her ‘toughness and vulnerability’.

In a statement, Muschietti said: ‘I saw more than four hundred auditions. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.’

While preparing for the audition, the potential actresses were not told what part they were reading for in the film until late in the process.

Sasha had chemistry reads with Flash actor Ezra Miller which were held over Zoom due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Supergirl first appeared on screens in 1984 in her own movie with Helen Slater taking on the role, while Mellisa Benoist has played the part in the Supergirl TV series, which is set to air its final season later this year.

Muschietti announced the casting by sharing a clip from a video call he had with Sasha via Instagram on Friday, in which he first claimed he needed to ‘ask more questions’ before they made their final decision.

The director jokingly questioned if Sasha could fly to which she quipped that she could ‘if you need me to’, and Muschietti then showed her the costume for Supergirl and informed her she’d landed the part.

Sasha burst into tears at the news and amusingly slipped onto the floor and off screen before she tearfully thanked him and producers for picking her to portray the character in the films.

The actress first rose to fame in the role of Lola Rosales in The Young And The Reckless, which earned her a nomination for Outstanding Young Performer at the Daytime Emmys last year.

The Flash is set to be released on November 4, 2022, and will be an adaptation of the character’s The Flashpoint storyline.
