TV executives reveal EXACTLY why Seven’s Holey Moley is on a ratings decline

Seven’s new mini-golf show Holey Moley has been on a ratings decline since its premiere episode earlier this month.

Despite drawing in more viewers than the Married At First Sight Grand Reunion for its episode on February 1, ratings have since significantly dwindled.

As reported by TV Tonight on Friday, television executives revealed why they believe the show has been on a ratings decline at Thursday’s Screen Forever conference.

Ben Ulm, Head of Reality & Factual for ITV Studios Australia, suggested airing the show on several days of the week as opposed to just a Sunday night, is its downfall.

‘It’s a terrific show, but with great hindsight, I think stripping it across a week was something that clearly hasn’t worked. I can imagine 10, 20, 30 years ago, you’d lean forward to watch that on a Sunday night,’ he said.

Debbie Cuell, Executive Producer for Endemol Shine Australia, added that storytelling is vital in keeping viewers entertained and tuning in for more.

‘With Holey Moley, there’s not a lot of story there, it’s a great action show. But what’s the story that’s going to bring you back?’ she said.

Holey Moley initially proved to be a ratings success when it beat the Married At First Sight Grand Reunion on February 1, with 983,000 metro viewers tuning in.

Married At First Sight only drew in a five-city metro audience of 781,000, a decline of more than 80,000 viewers the night prior during the two-part special.

Holey Moley’s ratings have since declined with only 723,000 viewers tuning in to watch Tuesday night’s episode, a marked difference of 768,000 the week prior.

Not enticing enough: Debbie Cuell, Executive Producer for Endemol Shine Australia, added that storytelling is vital in keeping viewers entertained and tuning in for more: 'It's a great action show, but what's the story that's going to bring you back?'

American comedian Rob Riggle shares commentary duties with Seven sports anchor Matt Shirvington, while golfing legend Greg Norman serves as the resident golf pro.
