Eamonn Holmes is scolded by This Morning caller for his treatment of wife Ruth Holmes

Eamonn Holmes was left disgruntled when a viewer demanded he be nicer to his wife Ruth Langsford on Friday’s episode of This Morning.

The TV host, 61, came under fire on Monday when he was accused of ‘fat-shaming’ his wife and co-star, 60, and his acerbic words came back to haunt him when a caller stated: ‘You shouldn’t be so miserable and be nice to [Ruth]’.

His words came after the couple, who are filling in for Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield for half-term, played It’s Behind You with the caller, who went on to make the jibe – leading to Eamonn insisting he was ‘always nice’ to Ruth.

Oh! Eamonn Holmes was left disgruntled when a viewer demanded he be nicer to his wife Ruth Langsford on Friday’s episode of This Morning

It’s Behind You entails a viewer calling in and describing what is behind the hosts, who have to guess the right answer, with Steven reigning victorious on Friday.

While he admitted he was happy at the turn of events, the caller was less than pleased with how Eamonn carries out his marriage on-screen.

Winner Steven said: ‘I’m very happy, and I’d like you to behave yourself. You’re going to have a nice weekend, Man U won last night, you can have a curry tonight, so you shouldn’t be so miserable and be nice to her’.

A shocked Eamonn, whose return to the show is the first since their Friday slot was axed last year, replied: ‘Two out of three isn’t bad,’ as Steven hung up.

He then joked: ‘Hear that? He said just be nice to me’, to which Ruth sniped back: ‘No he was saying you should be nice to me!’ Eamonn insisted: ‘I’m always nice to you!’

The couple have been married since since 2010 following a 13-year relationship.

On Monday, Eamonn first sparked fury when he made a jibe about Ruth’s weight on the magazine show, when they were again playing It’s Behind You.

During the game, a picture of Kate Middleton appeared on screen, with the caller saying: ‘She’s very thin,’ and ‘she’s married to…’ before his time ran out.

Eamonn turned to Ruth when he heard ‘thin’ and said: ‘She’s very thin, well it’s not you darling.’

Ruth ignored her husband’s remark and correctly guessed it was Kate Middleton before Eamonn added: ‘He wouldn’t say she was very thin and married to Eamonn Holmes, would he! No, he wouldn’t have done that!’

Viewers quickly took to social media to hit out at the remark, with one user saying: ‘Imagine body shaming your wife on national telly’.

Another user said: ‘As if Eamonn Holmes just said to Ruth “well it’s not you then” when the clue was “she’s very thin”… how rude!’

Another viewer added: ‘@ThisMorning not particularly great entertainment… fat shaming your wife on TV Eamonn’.

One unimpressed viewer said: ‘I understand joking artound with your other half but again with the “fat jibes  being thrown at the wife again.

‘It’s getting old Eamonn. Imagine the abuse Phil [Schofield] would get if he called Holly [Willoughby] or Allison [Hammond] fat’.

Elsewhere during the episode, Ruth admitted she is a ‘jealous woman’ and would not like it if she saw Eamonn ‘liking’ other women’s social media posts too often.
