Mike Gunner lashes out at British tabloids for claiming he made ‘harsh dig’ at ex Heidi Latcham

His 2019 season of Married At First Sight is currently airing on E4 in Great Britain.

But not all the resulting attention for groom Mike Gunner is welcome, based on the 45-year-old’s angry reaction on Wednesday to a UK tabloid’s coverage of his love life.

Taking to Instagram, the reality TV star lashed out at The Sun over their headline claiming his earlier post about new girlfriend Sonja Marcelline was actually a ‘harsh dig’ at ex Heidi Latchman. 

The cosmetic tattooist’s original post gushed over Marcelline, with Mike writing it was ‘nice to have a girl who gets me.’

The Sun interpreted it as Mike having ‘taken a swipe at his ex wife Heidi Latchman,’ with whom he had a famously fraught relationship.  

But Gunner angrily challenged that interpretation, writing, ‘Thanks @thesun newspaper for being unimaginative and hurtful with your assumptions.’ 

‘So you know, I wrote that caption to compliment my girl, not to criticise my ex.’

He concluded, ‘Seriously, what an obvious-lazy narrative. You went to university to learn to write this garbage? #trolls’. 

During their season, Mike infamously told Heidi ‘I’m not your therapist’ on their honeymoon when she tried to open up to him about her past. 

When later asked during the MAFS Grand Reunion if the former couple were still in touch, he said: ‘I’ve tried, but she doesn’t message back.’ 

However Gunner has since moved on, recently debuting his new relationship with Marcelline.

It was on Tuesday that he opened up about their romance – saying he was happy to finally ‘have a girl who gets me’.

Alongside a photo he posted of himself and the American beauty cuddling at the beach, Mike told his Instagram followers Sonja had a ‘gentle and kind’ nature, and ‘warm’ hugs.

‘Nice to have a girl who gets me,’ Mike captioned the post. ‘I’m pretty direct and often my filter gets clogged but she likes that about me.

‘Her hugs are warm and she’s gentle and kind.’

Mike added that his girlfriend was also not shy about putting him in his place when it was necessary.

‘She puts me in my place when I need it but also sees my soft side,’ he said. ‘I need that.’

Mike, who starred on the sixth season of MAFS and was paired with ex-‘wife’ Heidi Latcham, debuted the couple’s romance on February 10.

Alongside a picture of the couple spending a night out with friends, Mike wrote: ‘My girl.’

Sonja has a Master of Science from the University of West Florida, and divides her time between Queensland’s Brisbane and the Gold Coast. 

She debuted their relationship on Instagram on Sunday – uploading her very first picture of them together in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

While the post was only captioned with a single red heart emoji, it spoke a thousand words as the couple appeared to be overjoyed in each other’s company.

They were spotted smiling ear-to-ear in the picture, while they closely laid next to one another on a beach.
