DIY SOS: The Big Build viewers aren’t convinced by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s VERY bold design

A family-of-seven with two seriously sick children had their house transformed on tonight’s episode of DIY SOS: The Big Build.

Jan and Lucy live in Barnstaple, North Devon, with six-year-old triplet daughters Lola, Daisy and Amber and sons Kenneth, five, and Hadley, two.

Daisy and Amber, who are identical twins, both suffer from a severe form of Nephrotic syndrome, a condition which causes kidney failure and means both girls will one day need a kidney transplant.

Family life is dominated by hospital appointments and the parents live ‘on a knife edge’ knowing that Daisy and Amber’s condition could deteriorate at any moment.

At the start of the makeover Daisy, who was diagnosed first and has spent two months in a coma due to her condition, was undergoing 70 hours of dialysis a week at home, administered by a machine in her bedroom.

However Amber was also about to start dialysis, and the family did not have enough space for two machines.

It meant parents Jan and Lucy were faced with the prospect of making the four-hour round-trip to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children four times a week for their daughter to receive treatment.

Their fortunes were transformed by Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS: The Big Build team, including guest designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

They created enough space for two dialysis machines, added a bedroom and built a bespoke storage unit for the tonne of medical equipment the family has delivered every month.

Jan and Lucy broke down in tears as they were shown the results of the makeover, describing it as a ‘dream’.

Thanking the volunteers, Jan said: ‘What you guys have achieved here in just a few days, and the sacrifices you have all made for our family… How do I ever start to thank you?

‘I have no doubt everyone here is probably fighting a battle of their own, but you have still come here to help us… It is amazing. Absolutely amazing.’

However viewers were less convinced by Llewelyn-Bowen’s ostentatious design scheme, particularly the all-orange kitchen downstairs which one suggested was inspired by easyJet.

One tweeted: ‘Oh eck… I’m not sure about that orange kitchen LLB,’ while one remarked: ‘What a lovely episode of #DIYSOS but why the orange kitchen?!’

Another commented: ‘I’d be in tears with f****** orange kitchen units too. He’s taking the p** that Bowen fella.’

And one joked: ‘Having a little cry at #DIYSOS (and not just at the easyJet orange kitchen).’

The downstairs of the family home was reconfigured to create an open-plan living space, complete with a Mod-inspired feature wall and a statement all-orange kitchen.

The garage was converted into a bedroom for Jan and Lucy, with security cameras in the house allowing them to keep an eye on the girls and their dialysis machines upstairs.

The team also added a family bathroom on a second floor and an en-suite wet room for Daisy and Amber. Lucy and Jan were also given an en-suite shower room.

Outside a purpose-built storage facility was installed on the side of the building and the garden was landscaped.

At the end of the garden the team installed a garden room where the family can relax together.
