Celebrity chef Maggie Beer reveals her struggle with grief a year after daughter’s death

Maggie Beer was struck with the unexpected death of her daughter Saskia, aged 46, in February 2020. 

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph this week, the 76-year-old gracefully spoke about her heartbreaking struggle with grief. 

‘I don’t know that any mother or father ever truly recovers,’ she told the publication of her daughter’s passing.

‘But there will be a stage where the good memories and the love will overtake the loss,’ she added with hope.

Maggie went on to say that Saskia had a ‘true entrepreneurial spirit,’ and praised her business acumen and passion projects. 

‘She was a better businesswoman than Colin [Maggie’s husband] and I in lots of ways. But like me she would undertake something whether it made money or not.’

‘Everything had to be as good as it could be…forget the cost.’ 

Saskia’s memory lives on with her the namesake for Saskia Beer Farm Produce, and the family has created the Saskia Beer Churchill Fellowship. 

The Fellowship helps young people interested in food and farming to foster and develop that passion.

Beloved Maggie has been open about her personal pain following her daughter’s death in February of last year.       

A tearful Maggie told The Australian Women’s Weekly in November that her ‘broken-hearted’ family were trying to deal with the trauma of the loss. 

‘I don’t know that you do cope. You find things to do, to engage you. I don’t know that anyone really copes,’ she said.

‘Your life is changed forever and this year has been the worst of my life. But you have to turn your trauma into new things.’  

Maggie announced her daughter’s death on Sunday, February 16, 2020.

‘It is with broken hearts we need to let you all know that our beautiful, extraordinary daughter Saskia died unexpectedly yet peacefully in her sleep on Friday night,’ she said at the time.

Thousands paid their respects to Saskia when she died, from famous chefs and school friends, to market regulars, customers and fans who knew her from TV. 

‘The overwhelming outpouring of sympathy and support for Maggie, Colin and family during this tragic time has been truly moving,’ Maggie said at the time.

In addition to Saskia, Maggie also has another daughter, Elli.
