She’s the hard-nosed broadcaster who fell from grace after breaching Covid rules to celebrate her 60th birthday – and got pulled from Sky News as a result.

But after admitting she was an ‘idiot’, it seems that breakfast host Kay Burley really is truly sorry for her misdemeanour and anxious to make up for her ‘big mistake’.

After being taken off-air in December for six months, she has been spotted handing out food at London‘s Community Kitchen, whose work in supporting the vulnerable and homeless is more important than ever right now.

Filmed for a video posted on Facebook by the food hub’s organisers, Miss Burley is seen giving out bags filled with essential items such as bread and eggs to those dealing with poverty.

The journalist is taking a break from work after an internal review carried out by Sky into her birthday celebrations found that ‘Covid guidelines were breached’.

Sky’s political editor Beth Rigby and reporter Inzamam Rashid were also each suspended for three months for their involvement in the night out.

Miss Burley, who has worked for Sky News for 32 years, has been volunteering at the kitchen’s operations in Harrow and Wembley for the past seven or eight weeks.

In the video, a narrator says ‘our lovely volunteer Kay’s here’ as the news presenter, dressed in a high-vis vest over her coat, hands out bags of food.

A spokesman for London’s Community Kitchen said: ‘Credit to her, Kay is a very, very strong, grounded person – she really is passionate about what she’s doing.

‘She does come two to three times a week and she spends the best part of a full day here.’

He admitted people lining up to get their food were ‘quite shocked’ when they recognised her, adding: ‘It really lifts people up and I think that connection is really, really, important because it just makes people, who are not noticed, just feel a bit more important.’

The organisation, which is not a food bank, relies in part on surplus items that would have gone to landfill. Former Top Gear presenter James May and ex-England cricketer Mark Ramprakash have also given their support.

In December Miss Burley, who is also volunteering at a vaccination centre, said she would ‘step back from my role for a period of reflection’, adding: ‘It doesn’t matter that I thought I was Covid-compliant.

‘The fact is I was wrong, I made a big mistake and I am sorry. Some dear friends and colleagues have been pulled into this episode and I regret this enormously.’
