Peter Andre’s wife Emily hits out at trolls who criticised Captain Tom Moore’s holiday to Barbados

Peter Andre’s wife Emily has hit out at trolls for criticising the late Captain Tom Moore‘s recent trip to Barbados with his family.

Captain Tom, who sadly died on Tuesday aged 100 after battling pneumonia and coronavirus, headed on a trip of a lifetime to the Caribbean in December, but was slammed by trolls for travelling during the pandemic.

And reacting to the naysayers, the doctor, 31, branded the criticism ‘absolutely terrible’, as she noted that Captain Tom’s holiday was ‘perfectly acceptable. ‘

Speaking in her OK! magazine column about the news, Emily said: ‘Some people have questioned whether or not he should have travelled to Barbados in December with his family, and some have even trolled his family over it.

‘I think that is absolutely terrible, Captain Tom was the type of person to take every single opportunity, and this was no different.

‘It was a bucket-list trip, you only live once and he travelled there when it was perfectly acceptable to do so. I think I’d do the same if British Airways offered me a trip to Barbados and I was 100.’

Emily, who is working on the NHS front line and said Captain Tom’s fundraising efforts ‘meant so much’ to NHS staff, added that he would be ‘greatly missed’ and said her thoughts are with his family and friends.

At the time, the social media attacks on the national hero prompted fury from Piers Morgan, 55, who railed: ‘If your first thought when hearing Captain Sir Tom Moore is in hospital, fighting coronavirus, aged 100, knowing how dangerous that situation is, if your first thought is to troll him and his family, on Twitter.

‘A perfectly legal trip to Barbados, trip of a lifetime, to give him a break, he had been offered a free trip, we have no idea if it had anything to do with his subsequent illness.

‘We are in February now, this was back in December, we don’t know that at all, but frankly that’s a matter for the family, they did nothing wrong.’

Captain Tom ‘s family since have revealed he only tested positive for coronavirus after his ten-day stay in hospital being treated for pneumonia.

The 100-year-old was clear of coronavirus on December 9 before he flew away for what would be his final holiday to Barbados and again when he arrived home on January 6.

After returning to the UK he was admitted to Bedford Hospital on January 12 where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

As is standard for patients, he was tested on entry for coronavirus and throughout his stay and results all came back showing he was negative for Covid-19. He was unable to get a vaccine jab because of the treatment.

It came as his daughters Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira hailed the last year of Sir Tom’s life as ‘nothing short of remarkable’, adding: ‘He was rejuvenated and experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of’.

Sir Tom had been taken to hospital on Sunday after being treated for pneumonia for some time and testing positive for coronavirus last week.

His family praised the care he had received from the NHS and said they had been able to spend time with him in his final hours.

In a statement, Hannah and Lucy said: ‘We are so grateful that we were with him during the last hours of his life; Hannah, Benjie and Georgia by his bedside and Lucy on FaceTime.

‘We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother. We shared laughter and tears together.

‘The last year of our father’s life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of.

‘Whilst he’d been in so many hearts for just a short time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever.’

Sir Tom’s fundraising efforts raised more than £32 million for the NHS, walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday during the first national lockdown in April.

The veteran set out to raise £1,000 from his charity challenge but his efforts struck a chord with the nation, and praise and donations flooded in.
