Steph McGovern has admitted she told a cheeky lie about having live TV experience to get a job on BBC Breakfast.

The presenter, 38, joined the morning show in 2010 and stayed until she left to work with Channel 4 in 2019.

Revealing her fib on Steph’s Packed Lunch on Wednesday, she explained that she didn’t tell her employers until 10 seconds before going on air for the first time.

Speaking candidly, Steph told guest Chris Kamara: ‘I remember when I got the job of presenting Breakfast news, I’d been asked, “Have you ever done live TV before?” And I said yes… and I hadn’t.’

Laughing off the white lie, she added: ‘You’ve got to blag it sometimes in life and I told them 10 seconds before we went to air.’ 

Steph explained that her first time on air for the show was with Susanna Reid, with it being a big shock to the director when she made the revelation.

‘I’ve got a count in my ear now and it was a bit like this… Susanna Reid said “Good luck” and I said “Thanks”, she said, “But you’ve done live TV before?” 

‘And I said, “No I haven’t” and the director gasped in my ear’, Steph admitted.

Since working on BBC Breakfast, Steph as appeared on several shows including Shop Well For Less, Have I Got News For You and Watchdog. 

The journalist is now hosting her own show – Steph’s Packed Lunch – which sees her chat to a range of stars including Katie Price, Maureen Lipman and Oti Mabuse.

It comes amid reports that former glamour model Katie, 42, is in talks for a regular presenting job on Steph’s show. 

The reality star appeared on the programme on January 19 to discuss the challenges of raising her disabled son Harvey, 18. 

According to the Daily Star, bosses were impressed with her interview and her BBC documentary Harvey And Me has tempted them to offer her a regular roving reporter slot. 

A source said: ‘Katie went down a storm with bosses during her appearance on the show last month and producers are looking to make her a regular on the show.

‘Meetings are ongoing but after the success of her BBC documentary Harvey and Me, she’s keen to show there’s more to her than her glamour model past. 

‘She will be covering a string of serious issues that are close to her heart – almost in a roving reporter style position.’

The insider added that Katie could appear on the show, hosted by Steph, anywhere from twice a week to once every two weeks.

A representative for Channel 4 declined to comment while MailOnline has also contacted a representative for Katie Price.
