Tom Hanks sets off on a dangerous quest across 19th century America in the new trailer for his film News of the World.

The actor, 64, stars as civil war veteran Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd who agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will.

They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.

In the trailer, Tom’s character is seen speaking to a man who asks him: ‘What’s your business up here?’

He responds: ‘I read the news from town to town. I was headed down south, I found this child.’ 

His character moves from town to town as a non-fiction storyteller, sharing the news of presidents and queens, glorious feuds, devastating catastrophes, and gripping adventures from the far reaches of the globe.

Jefferson is then seen sitting across a campfire from the 10-year-old girl Johanna Leonberger / Cicada, played by Helena Zengel.

Tom’s character is asked why he is going on the journey with the girl and is heard saying: ‘After four years of war, all the killing and all the blood, I guess we all have demons to face’.  

News of the World is directed by Paul Greengrass (the Bourne films, United 93) from his screenplay with Luke Davies, based on the National Book Award finalist and best-selling novel by Paulette Jiles. 

Helena Zengel, the 12-year-old actress who appears alongside Tom in the upcoming film, told how the actor went to great lengths to boost her performance.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: ‘He was literally crying in every scene, even when it wasn’t shot on him – it was my close-up.

‘Doing it again and again for your partner when you don’t even see yourself in the movie was really amazing and great.’  

The film, which was released on Christmas Day in the US, received praise from critics and was called one of the ten best films of 2020 by the National Board of Review. 

News of the World is released on Netflix on February 10.
