Wonder Woman 1984 TRIUMPHS in the streaming wars as it soars to Christmas week win

Wonder Woman 1984 soared to a streaming win the week that it debuted in theaters and on HBO Max, an updated Nielsen list reveals.

The superhero movie starring Gal Gadot got 2.25 billion minutes of streaming time for the week of December 21 through December 27, the most of any feature film that week according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Since the movie itself is 151 minutes long that number comes out to roughly 14.9 million views – despite mixed reviews and a scathing fan reaction online.

Stepping out: Wonder Woman 1984 soared to a streaming win the week that it debuted in theaters and on HBO Max, an updated Nielsen list reveals

Before the new numbers came out Nielsen had given the number one spot to the Pixar animated film Soul which is now number two on its list.

It has now emerged Soul was streamed for 1.67 billion minutes that week on Disney+ – however it is also a much shorter film than Wonder Woman: 1984.

Soul’s running time comes in at 107 minutes, which means that it was streamed approximately 15.6 million times.

Nielsen only started publicly sharing streaming figures on a weekly basis last August and still does not consistently do so for HBO Max.

However they made an exception for Wonder Woman: 1984 ‘as we work toward introducing the data externally,’ according to Nielsen.

Soul is now at the number two spot in the Nielsen streaming list for the week of Christmas, as far as minutes of viewership are concerned.

Number three is The Office on Netflix with 1.44 billion minutes and number four is that streamer’s original show Bridgerton with 1.2 billion.

The Midnight Sky, a Netflix sci-fi movie directed by George Clooney and starring Felicity Jones, took fifth place with 1.11 billion.

Both The Midnight Sky and The Mandalorian were released before the week of Christmas unlike Soul and Wonder Woman: 1984 which both debuted December 25.

In the Nielsen rankings for Christmas week number seven was the 2000 movie How The Grinch Stole Christmas with 705 million minutes of Netflix streaming.

At number eight with 700 million minutes of streaming was the Netflix show The Crown which dropped its fourth season in mid-November.

HBO Max is now looking ahead to yet another highly publicized DC Universe release – Zack Snyder’s cut of the 2017 movie Justice League.

Zack had directed much of the film by the time he bowed out in the wake of his daughter’s suicide, leaving Joss Whedon to finish the job.

The resultant theatrical cut of the movie was a critical and commercial failure leading to a popular online movement to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.

Over the past few years the movement has been endorsed by stars of the film including Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck and Jason Momoa.

Zack Snyder announced this Friday that his cut of the movie, which includes reshoots that were done last year, will bow on HBO Max this March 18.

It appears that the Snyder Cut will come out as a four-hour movie contrary to previous reports that it might be a mini-series instead.
