Piers Morgan urges an exhausted Richard Gaisford to get some sleep on Good Morning Britain

‘Go back to bed!’ Piers Morgan urges an exhausted Richard Gaisford to get some sleep after usually composed correspondent suffers a brain freeze on Good Morning Britain

Good Morning Britain hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid urged an exhausted news correspondent to get some sleep on Thursday after he lost his train of thought while covering new US President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Journalist Richard Gaisford had been working through the night from Washington DC as Biden was sworn in during a ceremony overshadowed by the ongoing coronavirus health crisis.

But the usually composed correspondent was left befuddled while discussing Biden’s decision to overturn many of former President Donald Trump‘s controversial policies, including a move to rejoining the Paris climate accord.

Addressing the uncharacteristic stumble, he told viewers: ‘I apologise. I’ve completely lost my thread.’

The awkward moment, captured live while Gaisford reported back to ITV Studios, resulted in an amused Piers and Susanna advising their colleague to get some much needed sleep.

‘It’s three in the morning, you’ve had about an hour’s sleep. I’m surprised you can even speak,’ Piers told him, before joking that the ‘sheer relief’ of seeing Trump’s presidency come to an end had finished him off.

He added: ‘You know what mate? Go back to bed and get a well earned rest. You’ve had an amazing run.’

The gaffe prompted an overwhelming wave of supporting messages for Gaisford, and he was quick to acknowledge them in a Twitter post later that morning.

He wrote: ‘Thanks for all the kind messages – it’s not until you screw up you realise how kind people can be. Total brain freeze @GMB. Will thaw it out by tomorrow. Promise. X

Responding to the post, one fan tweeted: ‘It was real & reflected how we’re all feeling at the moment, bit frazzled..glad you’re human! Susanna covered for you, Piers took the #### so all was well!’

A third added: ‘Brought a smile to my face in these tough times! You are so obviously sleep deprived! Great reporting from the US.’
