Elizabeth Olsen confirms her Scarlet Witch character still has a Sokovian accent

Elizabeth Olsen was first introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2015 when her character Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where she spoke with an accent from her fictional homeland Sokovia.

Over the years, she became a part of the Avengers, though her Sokovian accent has ultimately disappeared, leading into her new TV series WandaVision.

Olsen was a guest on Collider’s Ladies Night to promote WandaVision, which continues its first season with a new episode on Friday, revealing that there is a big reason why the accent isn’t prominent.

‘So, the Sokovia accent was created by me and Aaron and our dialect coach because it’s a fake country and we could find different sources of Slavic sounds,’ Olsen explained.

She added that they took great care to not make Black Widow and her brother Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) sound Russian, ‘because Black Widow speaks Russian.’

Olsen said they needed the accent to, ‘sound more like Slovakian,’ adding they created ‘sound changes’ that worked for Taylor-Johnson’s British accent.

‘And then all of a sudden, all these different characters had to speak it in different films,’ Olsen added, though she explained it hasn’t disappeared.

‘So the Sokovian accent took a lot of time. It hasn’t gone anywhere. There have been reasons for everything,’ she added.

After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, where her homeland of Sokovia was destroyed, Scarlet Witch was recruited into the Avengers and she moved to their facility in upstate New York.

Olsen added that the accent, ‘lightened up when she started living in the States, while explaining why the accent won’ t be in WandaVision

‘In WandaVision she is playing the role of being in an American sitcom and so it’s not gone. It is absolutely still there,’ Olsen confirmed.

While making the press rounds for Avengers: Infinity War, directors Anthony and Joe Russo offered this explanation as to the loss of her accent.

‘“One is you’ll notice at the beginning of Civil War that Black Widow is training her to be a spy, and two is she’s been on the run, and one of the most distinguishing characteristics that she has is her accent,’ the directors  said.
