Eddie McGuire suspected a contestant was CHEATING on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? host Eddie McGuire reveals he suspected a contestant CHEATED to win $1million – and the drastic measures producers took to prove otherwise

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? host Eddie McGuire has revealed he once falsely believed a show champion had cheated his way to winning the $1million prize.

On Tuesday’s The Kyle and Jackie O Show, the 56-year-old claimed it was his belief that ‘absolutely something was wrong’ when Martin Flood became the second person to win the grand prize in 2005.

His suspicions were so extreme that producers even searched poor Martin for a wire to check he hadn’t been fed the answers while in the hot seat.

‘He just had this peculiar way of answering a question,’ Eddie said. ‘He was going all over the place.

‘We thought maybe he had somebody outside and he had a phone attached to his calf. It was just so odd what was going on.’

But producers soon realised it was just Martin’s knowledge and skill that helped him win the money – as he had literally trained for years to bag the million-dollar prize.

‘What we found out is that he took a year off work to study every question he could get his hands on from around the world,’ Eddie added.

‘He also studied me for any ticks or any gives that I was giving!’

In 2019, Martin spoke about his win in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald.

He revealed he was driven by the idea of dumping his dead-end job in IT in 1999, and decided to train himself in the art of trivia to prepare for the show.

‘I could hardly chat with anyone without trying to turn the conversation to last week’s episode,’ he said.

‘For the next five years that show became my life. I watched every episode of every quiz show I could, I read many trivia books and I went to many trivia nights.’
