Garth Brooks will perform at Biden’s inauguration, as the country singer jokes he’ll be the ‘only republican’ there

Country music star Garth Brooks said Monday he will perform at Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced on Monday that the country singer will be part of the swearing-in ceremony for the 46th president. The country singer joins previously announced performers Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez.

Future first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, reached out to Brooks to invite him to perform, and he joked he’ll likely be ‘the only Republican at the ceremony’.

During a Zoom call announcing the news on Monday, the singer told reporters: ‘I’ve played for every president there is, since Carter, with the exception of Reagan.

‘This is an honor for me to get to serve… and it’s one of the things that, if my family is around, no matter who the president-elect is, it’s an honor to be asked,’

‘This is not a political statement,’ said Brooks, who also performed at Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration. He was invited to perform at Trump’s 2017 inaugural but declined, citing a scheduling conflict.

‘This is a statement of unity,’ the Oklahoma-born crooner added. The main thing they’re pushing now is unity, and that’s right down my alley… I would say we’re more divided than ever, so that bridge that brings us together is key,

‘I don’t know. I might be the only Republican at this place. But reaching out, together… I want us to offer a differing opinion and hug each other at the same football game. …I think as long as you have people like the Bidens who are hellbent on making things good,… That makes me feel good.

‘Because I want to spend the next 10 years of my life not divided. I’m so tired of being divided.’ Brooks added.

The 58-year-old singer hasn’t revealed which songs he plans on performing.

Brooks also reflected on the violence that broke out at the capitol on January 6, calling it ‘disturbing and sad’.

‘It felt like it was in some other country, but it was here. Now we deal with it and take responsibility… and now we do our best to make sure something like that doesn’t happen again.’

Due to the coronavirus pandemic as well as the security threat from pro-Trump terrorists, Biden’s inaugurations is going to be a largely virtual event.

Tom Hanks will host a 90-minute special that will lead into the ceremony, including appearances from Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, Foo Fighters, Jon Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake and Demi Lovato.

The special, titled Celebrating America will be broadcast on social media as well as ABC, CBS, NewsNow from Fox, and Amazon Prime Video.
