Why Australian rapper Illy purposely steers clear of writing about exes in lyrics

Australian rapper Illy reveals why he would never memoralise a break-up by blasting exes in his song lyrics

Musicians often used their pasts as material for their lyrics.

But Australian rapper Illy – real name Alasdair Murray- has revealed why he purposely steers clear of incorporating former flames into his songs’ verses.

In an interview with The Sun-Herald, the 34-year-old said he could not fathom the idea of memoralising a break-up, or casting himself as a victim in a breakup.

‘I can’t think of anything more selfish’: Australian rapper Alasdair Murray, who goes by stage name Illy, reveals why he steers clear of singing about past relationships in his songs

‘I care about the other person and I can’t think of anything more selfish than being responsible for a break-up and then turning it into an album where they’re at fault,’ he said.

He added: ‘I’d like to think I wouldn’t do that, and I also have too much love and respect for my ex to even consider it.’

Illy’s comments follow his latest album, The Space Between, being released on Friday.

He will follow this up with two celebratory performance shows later this month, with one in Melbourne and the other in Sydney.

‘There was no way I wasn’t doing something to celebrate a release week that’s been such a long time coming,’ he said in a statement.

The two-time ARIA winner confessed he was ‘thrilled’ to have a chance to perform, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic putting a halt to live music for much of 2020.

His comments to the publication also follow The Sunday Telegraph bizarrely mistaking him for Canadian rapper Drake.

‘Hey guys, been meaning to tell you for a while. I’m actually Canadian rapper Drake,’ Illy cheekily captioned the post.

‘Man… feels good to finally get that off my chest. Thank me later.’
