Canberra City Centre is shut down as action-packed car chase is filmed in for big budget movie Blacklight starring Liam Neeson

The streets of Canberra were taken over by a film crew who captured a high-octane car chase for the big budget Liam Neeson film, Blacklight, this week.

Onlookers pulled out their phones to take footage of the high-adrenaline filming in the suburb of Civic.

The scene involved a garbage truck speeding down a city street while being chased by a grey sports car.

The truck swerved out of the way of other cars before making a sharp turn out into a a street that was out of view from people watching on. 

There was also a pick-up truck with Confederate flags, an American flag and a motorbike on the back.

Canberra’s WIN News spoke to the film’s producer Paul Currie, who said they transformed the Australian capital’s City Centre into Downtown Washington.

He said the scene centres around the protagonist who escapes Liam’s character and and jumps into a garbage truck.

The scene caught the attention of Canberreans who watched the action unfold. 

One male onlooker remarked: ‘To see the stunts happen right before you’re eyes, it’s pretty amazing.’

While a woman watching on exclaimed: ‘The fact that it was filmed here is pretty cool.’

Unfortunately for fans looking to meet Liam, the actor returned to the US after filming scenes in Melbourne back in November.

The star also spent two weeks in hotel quarantine in Sydney after arriving from overseas. 

The Irishman was seen on the set of the film at the time, wearing a protective face mask to limit the spread of COVID-19 as he stepped out of his trailer to meet an awaiting film crew.

Liam’s new action flick will bolster the local film industry and bring hundreds of jobs to local Australians amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in the US.

The $43million movie features Liam take on the role of a ‘troubled off-the-books fixer for the FBI tasked with pulling undercover agents out of dangerous situations’, according to production.

Blacklight is written, directed and produced by Mark Williams, who is the co-creator of the Emmy-award winning Netflix series, Ozark.

Mark, who also directed Liam in his recent movie Honest Thief, revealed he chose to film Blacklight in Australia over America and the UK due to the country’s successful handling of the coronavirus crisis.
