Anna Paquin joins Zachary Levi in the true story adaptation American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story

While Zachary Levi has been attached to play Kurt Warner in American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, the true story adaptation has now found Kurt’s wife, with Anna Paquin signing on.

The 38-year-old actress has come aboard to play Paula Warner, the wife of the NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback, according to Deadline.

The real Kurt and Paula Warner are co-producing the adaptation, based on Kurt’s memoir All Things Possible: My Story of Faith, Football and the First Miracle Season.

Warner was raised in Iowa and played football for the University of Northern Iowa, although he was not drafted by any NFL team upon graduation.

He was invited to try out for the Green Bay Packers in 1994, though he was released and ended up stocking shelves at a grocery store in Iowa.

Warner tried another route to the NFL, going through the Arena Football League, signing with the Iowa Barnstormers, leading them to two straight ArenaBowl title game appearances.

After his success in the Arena League, he signed with the St. Louis Rams, and after an injury to Trent Green, Warner was named the starting quarterback for the 1999 season, where he turned in one of the greatest performances by any quarterback in NFL history.

He lead team to a 13-3 record, throwing for 4,353 yards with 41 touchdown passes and a completion rate of 65.1%, leading an offense that would be dubbed, ‘The Greatest Show on Turf.’

Warner’s heroics didn’t stop there, leading his team to a Super Bowl win over the Tennessee Titans and was named both the Super Bowl MVP and the overall NFL MVP, a feat no player has accomplished since.

He ended up playing 10 more seasons in the NFL, ending his career with the Arizona Cardinals, before retiring in early 2010, the same year he was inducted into the Arena Football Hall of Fame.

The quarterback was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2017, becoming the only player in history to be enshrined in both Halls.

Since retiring he has served as a coach for various high school programs around Arizona.

Jon and Andrew Erwin are directing American Underdog, reuniting them with star Zachary Levi, who starred in Unbreakable Boy which the Levin’s produced.

The Erwins are working from a script by David Aaron Cohen (Friday Night Lights), Jon Gunn (Unbreakable Boy) and Jon Erwin, with Kevin Downes and sports movie specialist Mark Ciardi (The Rookie, Miracle, Secretariat) producing.

Paquin most recently starred in The Irishman, and her Pop TV series Flack will debut on Amazon later this month, with Season 2 debuting later this year.
