‘The highlight of my day’: UK viewers praise Married At First Sight Australia for helping them cope with coronavirus lockdown

The UK was plunged into lockdown last week after a surge in mutant coronavirus cases threatened to overwhelm the NHS.  

Luckily, residents have found a fail-proof way to cope with with depressing reality of bunkering down for the third time in a year – watching the sixth season of Married At First Sight Australia.  

The explosive reality show began airing its 2019 season on E4, a dedicated entertainment channel in the UK, on January 4th this year, and has since become an obsession for many bored British viewers stuck at home.

Even British pop-star Ella Eyre praised the controversial program, Tweeting: ‘New Married At First Sight Australia is getting me through this lockdown.’

Other fans have even joked that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson should re-schedule his public broadcasts as not to clash with the reality show. 

‘Why is Boris addressing the nation at 8??? Doesn’t he know that Married At First Sight Australia starts at half 7? Inconsiderate,’ one Twitter user joked.  

Married At First Sight 2019 is regarded as one of the franchise’s most controversial seasons, thanks to its inclusion of cheating scandals and physical altercations.

Among the many scandals featured on the show were Jessika Power and Dan Webb’s ‘couple swap’, the Cyrell Paule and Martha Kalifatidis’ ‘wine pouring’ incident, and the cheating saga between Ines Basic and Sam Ball. 

For the first time ever, female and male participants were also encouraged to spend time separately to test the strength of their relationships. 

The UK has its own version of Married at First Sight, which airs on Channel 4 and was first broadcast in 2015.
